a third time.

Daniel took the papers.

“You're a beneficiary.”

“Yes.”

“And so are we.”

I stared at me.

“That doesn't make it untrue.”

I continued reading.

The trust contained a restriction: the property could not legally be sold, transferred, mortgaged or pledged without written approval from every living beneficiary.

I looked toward the bedroom door.

“Then Robert's collateral is worthless.”

“Potentially.”

“Potentially?”

“We need the actual trust documents examined. vanished.

“Why would Dad be so desperate for the deed?”

Daniel turned the next page.

“Maybe because whoever he's dealing with doesn't know about the trust.”

“Or because they do.”

He looked at me.

We continued through the documents.

Then Daniel there.”

“My father didn't trust Robert.”

“At the end, maybe.”

“No. Long before that.”

I took the document.

Robert's name appeared beneath my mother's.

For several seconds I couldn't understand why the sight disturbed me.

Then I noticed the company.”

“Yes.”

“What company?”

Robert looked directly at me.

I felt cold before he spoke.

“The company is registered to Elena Carter.”

The folder slipped from my hands.

It hit the floor.

The original deed slid partly free.

Robert stared at it.

I barely noticed.

A company I didn't remember creating.

Millions of dollars my mother had never told me existed.

Properties held in my name.

A forged signature.

A debt tied to my house.

Suddenly Robert's desperation made terrible sense.

He hadn't come back because he missed me.

He had come because my name sat in the middle of whatever he had done.

“Tell me everything.”

Robert shook his head.

“Elena.”

“Everything.”

“You don't want it.”

“I've spent two years believing you left because another woman mattered more than your family.”

He looked at me.

“And now I'm discovering that while I was grieving our marriage, you were hiding millions of dollars behind my name.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Tell me.”

Robert looked at our children.

Then at me.

“I didn't leave you because I wanted Vanessa.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She was never the reason.”

“You told me she was.”

“I needed you to believe it.”

My heart began beating harder.

“Why?”

He looked toward the folder on the floor.

“Because your mother told me to leave you.”

No one moved.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She was dying.”

“I know.”

“And she ordered you to destroy our marriage?”

Robert swallowed.

“She believed it was the only way to keep you out of what was happening.”

“What was happening?”

“Someone was stealing from her.”

“Who?”

“I didn't know at first.”

“Who did she think it was?”

Robert reached inside his coat.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

Robert pulled out a photograph.

He placed it on the coffee table.

My father stood in the picture.

Beside him was my mother.

Robert stood behind them.

At the edge was a silver-haired man in a dark suit whom I didn't recognize.

I picked up the photograph.

My father had been dead for years.

Seeing him unexpectedly made my chest ache.

“Who is this?”

Robert pointed to the stranger.

“His name is Victor Hale.”

“What does he have to do with my family?”

“More than you know.”

I turned the photograph over.

Four handwritten words appeared on the back.

I recognized my mother's writing instantly.

He knows everything, Elena.

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

I looked at Robert.

“What does that mean?”

His face went white.

“I don't know all of it.”

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Robert looked at the blue folder lying open on the floor.

Then at the photograph.

Then at me.

“Your mother thought someone had been stealing millions from her accounts.”

“Victor?”

“She believed so.”

“And my father?”

Robert didn't answer.

“Why is Dad in this photograph?”

His silence frightened me.

“Robert.”

He took a breath.

“Because your mother wasn't the first person who discovered something was wrong.”

“Who was?”

His eyes moved toward the photograph of my father.

I felt the answer before he gave it.

“Your father.”

The room seemed to contract around me.

“My father died before any of this.”

Robert's expression broke.

“Elena, the story you were told about your father's death wasn't the whole truth.”

I couldn't speak.

He pointed toward the blue folder.

“That's why your father told you to hide those documents.”

My hand trembled around the photograph.

“What did he know?”

Robert looked directly at me.

“Enough to understand that one day someone would come for this house.”

I thought of my father's warning.

Open the envelope if Robert ever asks about the house.

A warning given years before our marriage collapsed.

Years before the forged loan.

Years before Robert supposedly knew he would need the deed.

The realization left me colder than the threatening phone call had.

My father had anticipated this.

Somehow, long before Robert abandoned me, Dad had known my husband might one day return looking for the house.

I looked at the altered trust document.

At Robert's name written in different ink.

At the photograph of my parents beside a stranger named Victor Hale.

Then at the four words my mother had left behind.

He knows everything, Elena.

For the first time that morning, I stopped wondering why Robert had come back.

A much worse question had taken its place.

What had my parents known about my husband before I did?

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Name Hidden in My Father’s Papers Connected Robert’s Lies
