Buddy lifted his head from beside the back door, gave one suspicious bark, then another. I glanced toward the hallway. None of my children had come downstairs yet. The house still had that rare early-morning quiet I had learned to treasure after two years of rebuilding a life that had once seemed impossible to put back together.

The knocking came again.

Three measured blows.

Not a neighbor, then. Not Marisol, who had a key and considered knocking an unnecessary social ritual. Not Daniel or Lucas either. Both boys had inherited my habit of calling before they came over, mostly because they knew their sister might already be occupying the kitchen and eating everything in sight.

I set my mug beside the sink and walked toward the front door.

Buddy followed until I pointed at the rug.

“Stay.”

He sat, though the offended look he gave me suggested he considered the command professionally insulting.

Through the narrow pane of glass beside the door, I saw a man's shoulder. Dark coat. Gray shirt underneath. One hand hanging at his side.

Something inside me recognized him before my mind did.

I stopped with my fingers inches from the lock.

For two years I had imagined what I would do if Robert ever came back. The fantasies changed depending on how angry I was. Sometimes I slammed the door. Sometimes I delivered a perfect speech that left him speechless. In my less dignified versions, I threw something.

I had never imagined simply standing there.

Another knock.

“Elena?”

His voice passed through the wood.

My stomach tightened.

Robert.

My ex-husband.

The man who had spent fifteen years sharing my bed and raising our children with me before deciding, with astonishing efficiency, that he preferred another life.

I opened the door.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

He looked older.

That surprised me more than it should have. Robert had always possessed the irritating ability to look composed even when everyone around him was falling apart. His hair had once been almost entirely black; now gray showed heavily at the temples. The expensive confidence I remembered had faded too. His coat was good, but wrinkled. His jaw carried at least two days of stubble.

He looked like a man who had slept badly for weeks.

I folded my arms.

“You're early.”

His mouth twitched.

“I wasn't sure you'd open the door.”

“I wasn't sure either.”

He glanced past me into the house.

The movement was small, but I noticed it.

“What do you want?”

His eyes returned to mine. “Can I come in?”

“No.”

The answer came so easily that I almost smiled.

Robert blinked.

“Elena.”

“You asked.
