Bellmont House was loud that evening, full of silverware against porcelain, low conversation from the adjoining dining room, and the soft piano music the restaurant used to make expensive dinners feel even more expensive. Daniel stood at the head of our private table with one hand around his crystal flute. Candlelight caught the edge of his watch. His parents looked up expectantly. His younger sister, Melissa, already had her phone angled toward him, recording.

Daniel smiled.

“To nine years,” he said.

Everyone lifted a glass.

Then he glanced at me.

“And to the biggest mistake of my life.”

The table erupted.

His father slapped the linen hard enough to rattle the water glasses. Melissa bent forward laughing. Daniel’s mother covered her mouth with two fingers, the way she always did when she wanted to pretend she was more civilized than whatever amused her.

I sat beside Daniel with my champagne untouched.

Nine years.

That was what he had reduced to a punch line.

He looked at me, waiting.

Apparently, my role in the joke was to laugh too.

When I didn’t, he nudged my shoulder with the back of his hand.

“Come on, Claire.”

His grin widened.

“You know I’m kidding.”

“Do I?”

The laughter thinned.

Daniel gave me the look he used whenever I said something that complicated the version of events he preferred. It was never quite anger. Anger would have admitted I mattered enough to provoke him. This was closer to irritation at a machine refusing to work.

Melissa rescued him.

“Oh, Claire. Don’t make it weird.”

She still had her phone pointed toward us.

I looked directly into its camera.

“I’m not the one who made it weird.”

That produced an uncomfortable silence.

Daniel sat down.

His hand settled on my knee beneath the table. Anyone watching might have mistaken it for affection.

His fingers tightened.

“Enough,” he murmured.

I moved my leg away.

His mother noticed.

She noticed everything that could later be retold as evidence against me.

“Well,” Patricia Prescott said brightly, “Daniel has always had a terrible sense of humor.”

Richard, his father, chuckled.

“That’s what happens when a man spends his whole life under pressure.”

Under pressure.

I almost smiled at that.

Daniel had spent years cultivating the image of a man carrying an empire alone. Every difficult decision belonged to him. Every sleepless night belonged to him. Every successful negotiation was proof of his instincts.

Anything I had done vanished somewhere between the work itself and the story Daniel later told about it.

The waiter entered with our next course, giving everyone permission to look somewhere else.

I watched him place a plate in front of me.

Seared scallops. Parsnip purée. A curl of lemon peel.

I had selected the anniversary menu three weeks earlier.

Daniel had forgotten to make the reservation.

Again.

I had made it myself.

That fact suddenly seemed less trivial than it had that afternoon.

Melissa lowered her phone but did not put it away.

“So,” she said, “are you two doing anything after dinner?”

Daniel answered before I could.

“I have an early meeting.”

“On your anniversary?”

He shrugged.

“Some of us work.”

Melissa laughed.

The sentence landed differently from the toast.

I turned my head.

Daniel was cutting into his steak.

“Some of us?” I asked.

He didn’t look up.

“It’s an expression.”

“No. It was a comparison.”

His knife stopped.

Patricia sighed.

“Claire, surely we don’t need to analyze every word.”

“I’m not analyzing anything.”

Daniel finally met my eyes.

“Then drop it.”

I studied him.

There had been a time when Daniel Prescott could tell from the way I held a coffee mug whether I had slept badly. He used to call from the road just because he had seen something funny on a billboard. When his first trucking contract fell apart, he had driven straight to my apartment and sat on the kitchen floor because he trusted me enough to be frightened in front of me.

I had loved that man.

Sometimes I still saw pieces of him.

That was probably why I had stayed so long after those pieces became difficult to find.

Richard poured himself more wine.

“Daniel tells us the expansion is going well.”

“It is,” Daniel said.

“Eighty-three employees now?”

“Eighty-three.”

Richard looked impressed.

“From two trucks to eighty-three employees. The bank had refused to extend the company’s line of credit. Suppliers were demanding payment. Two senior drivers were threatening to leave.

Daniel had come home at two in the morning and vomited in our bathroom from panic.

I had sat beside him on the tile floor.

By sunrise, I had transferred money from the inheritance my father left me.

Six hundred forty thousand dollars.

Not a loan.

Not a symbolic contribution.

It was almost everything my father had spent a lifetime building.

I had also left a promising career in forensic accounting because Daniel needed someone who could untangle the company’s books, restructure its debt, rebuild its projections, and convince a bank that Prescott Logistics could survive.

I did those things.

The company survived.

Then it grew.

Somewhere during that growth, the story changed.

At first Daniel said we had saved the company.

Later, he said I had helped.

Eventually, he told people I had supported him.

For the last few years, he had simply said I stayed home.

Melissa reached for the bread.

“I still don’t understand how you do nothing all day, Claire.
