19 – In Thomas’s Spokane Attic, I Found the Life He Had Built Without Me and a Box Containing Twenty-Seven Years of Unsent Birthdays

The drive to Spokane took us across a landscape Thomas had traveled many times without me.

Sarah drove.

Rebecca sat beside her.

I sat in back with Arthur’s ring around my neck and Thomas’s 2004 letter in my handbag.

No police escort.

Chen knew where we were going.

Andrew had insisted the house be checked before our arrival.

Nothing dangerous was found.

I appreciated the precaution without wanting to see it.

The house stood on a quiet street lined with maples.

Two stories.

Pale siding.

A porch Arthur would have liked.

Sarah stopped at the curb.

“That’s home.”

Not was.

Is.

The word mattered.

I looked at the upstairs window.

Thomas had slept there.

Raised a daughter there.

Argued with Rebecca there.

Received cancer diagnoses there.

Written letters to me there.

All inside a house Arthur secretly bought for him.

I stepped onto the porch.

The front door stuck slightly.

Sarah lifted it while turning the key.

“Dad always said he’d fix that.”

Rebecca smiled.

“He said that for fifteen years.”

Thomas had finally found something he refused to repair.

Inside, the house smelled closed.

Wood.

Dust.

A trace of lemon cleaner.

Furniture remained because the trust repurchased it with the property.

Thomas’s chair sat near the living-room window.

His mug remained in a cabinet.

Sarah touched things as she passed.

Not sentimentally.

Checking.

Confirming.

“He used to leave his boots there.”

She pointed beside the door.

A pale mark remained on the floor.

Rebecca stopped near the kitchen.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Sarah asked.

“Nothing.”

“No. Tell me.”

Rebecca touched the counter.

“I used to stand here when your father came home late.”

“Waiting?”

“Pretending not to.”

Sarah nodded.

I understood that too.

Thomas’s life with them had been ordinary in ways I had never imagined.

That hurt more gently than evidence.

The attic stairs folded from the hallway ceiling.

Sarah pulled the cord.

Dust drifted down.

Andrew’s warning had made us cautious.

We used gloves.

Photographed before touching.

Ridiculous for family objects.

Necessary after everything.

The attic held holiday decorations, Sarah’s childhood school projects, boxes of clothes, broken furniture, and one wooden rocking horse.

I saw Arthur’s hand immediately.

The curve of the neck.

The slightly oversized ears.

Arthur could build almost anything except a realistic horse.

“They always looked like dogs,” I said.

Sarah laughed.

“You’re right.”

I turned it over.

A.V.

Beneath Arthur’s initials was another carving.

T.A.V.

Thomas.

He had added his initials beside his father’s.

Sarah touched them.

“When?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I never saw that.”

Behind the horse sat a large cedar box.

Not locked.

On the lid:

FOR MOM, IF SHE EVER COMES HERE.

My knees weakened.

Sarah pulled an old chair toward me.

I sat.

Then opened the box.

Birthday cards.

Hundreds.

Not letters exactly.

Cards.

Some handmade.

Some purchased.

One for every birthday I had after Thomas disappeared.

1999.

2000.

2001.

All the way to 2025.

None mailed.

The first card was simple.

Mom,

Happy birthday.

I’m alive.

I’m sorry that is all I can safely give you.

Thomas.

The next year:

I remembered the lemon cake you pretend not to like because Dad always ate the last piece.

I hope someone makes you one.

The next:

Sarah took her first steps yesterday.

I wanted to call you so badly I walked around the block six times instead.

I stopped.

Sarah sat on the floor.

“He wrote about me.”

Every card did.

Sarah’s first word.

First day of school.

Broken arm.

Lost tooth.

Piano lessons abandoned after three months.

A school play.

A terrible science project involving mold.

Thomas had written my grandmotherhood into cards I never received.

Rebecca cried beside the attic window.

“I didn’t know he kept all of them.”

I opened 2004.

The year he came to my building.

Mom,

I was four floors away from you today.

I gave Samuel a letter.

If he delivers it, maybe next year I will write this card knowing you have seen my name again.

He never did.

2005:

Samuel says you read my letter.

I don’t know why I keep writing these.

Maybe because stopping would mean I believe you meant what he said.

Thomas had doubted.

Even after Samuel lied.

2006:

Sarah asked why she doesn’t have grandparents.

I told her families can be complicated.

That is a coward’s sentence.

I put the card down.

Sarah covered her face.

Rebecca sat beside her.

This time Sarah allowed her mother’s hand on her back.

2008:

I saw a photograph of you at Vance’s Hearth’s old neighborhood festival.

You looked older.

That was unfair of me to notice because I am older too.

I still picture you at forty-nine.

I wonder which version of me you picture.

Twenty-three.

Always twenty-three.

That was the answer.

2010:

We bought the house.

It feels strangely familiar.

There is a rocking horse in the attic with Dad’s initials.

I don’t understand how it got here.

If there is such a thing as a coincidence, this one feels cruel.

Thomas did not know yet.

2015:

I know now Dad bought this house.

Price finally told me part of it.

I spent years thinking I built a home without him.

Turns out he was underneath it the whole time.

I looked at Daniel’s name.

Price had apparently told Thomas more than he admitted to us.

Not everything.

Enough.

2016 was different.

The card remained blank inside except for one sentence.

I did something today I do not know how to tell you.

Luis.

Or Carlos.

Perhaps both accumulated.

2018:

I learned Carlos is dead.

I chose you.

I don’t know how to ask forgiveness for a choice I would probably make again if the threat were real enough.

That is the worst thing I know about myself.

I closed my eyes.

There was Thomas.

Not sanitized.

Not performing remorse.

Terrified by his own capacity.

2020:

Sarah thinks Rebecca is dead.

I watched my daughter cry and told myself the lie was keeping her alive.

Dad would have hated me for that.

Maybe he would have understood.

I’m starting to think understanding is not always comforting.

2022:

Andrew is alive.

His father thinks he is dead.

I told Andrew to call him.

Andrew asked whether I had called you.

That ended the argument.

I almost laughed.

Thomas recognized hypocrisy when someone placed it directly in his hands.

2024:

I drove past your apartment today.

I did not stop.

I wish I had a more complicated explanation.

I was afraid.

That was all.

No Hale.

No gun.

No surveillance.

Fear.

2025:

Cole showed me Hale has exaggerated the threat against you for years.

I should feel relieved.

Instead I feel sick.

I built part of my absence on a lie I wanted to believe because it made absence easier.

I stared at the sentence.

Thomas had finally understood the hardest truth.

Danger explained much.

Not everything.

He had sometimes needed Hale’s threat because it made his own fear honorable.

The final card was 2026.

Unfinished.

Mom,

I have cancer.

I know I am dying.

I stood outside your apartment again.

There was more written beneath.

Then crossed out.

I held the page toward the light.

Sarah photographed it and increased contrast.

The crossed words emerged.

I wanted you to see me before I looked like someone you had to forgive.

My throat closed.

Below that, Thomas had written:

That sentence is vanity.

I’m leaving it crossed out because it is still true.

I laughed and cried at once.

Rebecca did too.

The card continued:

I am going to send Sarah to you when I’m gone.

This is cowardly.

It is also the only plan I have left that I trust myself to complete.

If she comes, please do not punish her for my choices.

If you want nothing from me, give her the house.

I looked around.

Arthur’s house.

Thomas’s house.

Sarah’s house.

Then:

There is one thing in this box that belongs to you.

Under the cards was a cloth bundle.

I unfolded it.

A kitchen apron.

White once.

Now yellowed.

VANCE’S HEARTH embroidered across the chest.

Mine.

I recognized the small burn near the pocket.

I had thrown it away after Arthur died.

Or thought I had.

Thomas had taken it.

Folded inside was a Polaroid.

The three of us in the restaurant kitchen.

Arthur.

Thomas.

Me.

1988.

Flour everywhere.

Thomas maybe thirteen.

Arthur holding a loaf like a trophy.

I was laughing.

Not posing.

Laughing.

I had forgotten that photograph existed.

On the back, Thomas wrote:

This is the family I kept trying to get back to.

I finally understood his mistake.

There was no returning to that photograph.

Arthur could not be saved.

Thomas could not become thirteen.

I could not become the woman laughing in flour.

He had spent decades trying to repair time instead of living inside what remained.

I touched Sarah’s face.

What remained was sitting beside me.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing the grandma thing.”

“What grandma thing?”

“Looking at me like I’m supposed to understand without you saying anything.”

I laughed.

“Apparently it’s hereditary.”

Rebecca smiled.

Sarah leaned against me.

We stayed in the attic for hours.

Not investigating.

Reading.

Thomas’s cards were not evidence for prosecutors.

They were evidence of another kind.

A life continued in absence.

At the bottom of the cedar box was one final object.

A VHS tape.

Label:

MOM’S 50TH.

My fiftieth birthday.

1999.

Months after Arthur died.

I had spent it alone.

Or believed I had.

Rebecca found an old combination television and VCR in the downstairs closet.

Thomas kept obsolete machines.

Of course he did.

We carried the tape downstairs.

The image flickered.

A parking lot appeared.

My apartment building.

The date stamp showed my birthday.

Thomas was behind the camera.

His voice whispered:

“There she is.”

I appeared.

Fifty.

Carrying groceries.

Alone.

I watched myself unlock the door.

Thomas followed from a distance.

Not close enough to be seen.

I disappeared inside.

The camera remained on the building.

Thomas said:

“Happy birthday, Mom.”

Then silence.

After almost a minute:

“I’m sorry.”

The video ended.

Sarah turned toward me.

“He came that year too.”

“Yes.”

Thomas had been orbiting home almost from the beginning.

Not constantly.

Not enough.

But more than I knew.

My phone rang.

Chen.

He had news from Hale’s emergency archive.

Investigators found a record proving the annual informant agreement ended in 2018.

Not 2024.

Thomas continued sending Hale Lantern files voluntarily after the contractual threat against me expired.

Sarah heard.

“Why?”

Chen said analysts found Thomas’s explanation.

The post-2018 files were bait.

Thomas used them to map Hale’s remaining network.

That aligned with Andrew’s account.

But there was another discovery.

Hale kept recordings of his meetings with Thomas.

One from 2018.

Thomas confronted him.

“You don’t have anyone watching Mom anymore.”

Hale answered:

“Maybe.”

Thomas:

“I checked.”

Hale:

“Then congratulations.”

Thomas said:

“The deal is over.”

Hale agreed.

Then Hale asked:

“What are you going to do now?”

A long silence.

Thomas answered:

“Go home.”

My heart stopped.

Hale laughed.

“No, you’re not.”

“Watch me.”

“You’ve spent nineteen years making Eleanor into the reason you stay away.”

Thomas said nothing.

Hale continued:

“What happens when you lose the excuse?”

The recording ended.

Thomas did not come home in 2018.

Hale was right about that.

Not because Hale stopped him.

Because Thomas stopped himself.

Sarah looked at me.

“Does that change anything?”

“Yes.”

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still want him here?”

I looked toward the attic where twenty-seven birthday cards waited.

“Yes.”

Both could exist.

Then Chen said there was more.

A second 2018 recording.

Made three weeks later.

Thomas returned to Hale.

Hale sounded amused.

“I thought you were going home.”

Thomas answered:

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

A long silence.

Then:

“I saw her.”

My pulse changed.

“Where?” Hale asked.

Thomas said:

“At the cemetery.”

Arthur’s grave.

I remembered 2018.

Arthur’s birthday.

I had gone alone.

“What did Thomas see?” I asked Chen.

He played the recording.

Thomas said:

“She was talking to Dad.”

Hale laughed softly.

“What did she say?”

Thomas’s voice became almost inaudible.

“She said she hoped I was dead.”

The room went completely still.

Sarah looked at me.

I remembered.

Oh God.

I remembered.

Standing beside Arthur’s grave.

Angry.

Lonely.

I had said it aloud.

I hope wherever Thomas is, he’s dead enough not to hurt anyone else.

I had not known my son stood within hearing distance.

Thomas had finally come home after the threat against me ended.

He went to Arthur’s grave first.

And heard his mother wish him dead.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Thomas Heard Me Wish Him Dead the Year He Finally Came Home, and I Had to Decide
