But Thomas did not learn that until 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five years after the body was found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe located Carlos\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he contact her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty-two thousand dollars over seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Restitution from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>Repair without confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told her why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScholarship foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad really loved anonymous money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>Money could arrive without requiring him to face the person he hurt.<\/p>\n<p>That made generosity easier.<\/p>\n<p>It also preserved cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena Mendez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we contact her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want her to know where the money came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cShe may hate Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the lesson moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>People got to know.<\/p>\n<p>Then choose.<\/p>\n<p>Chen\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened, asked two questions, and looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency archive contained more Arthur files.<\/p>\n<p>Not just the murder order.<\/p>\n<p>A cassette labeled ELEANOR\u20142004.<\/p>\n<p>The year Thomas came to my building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t played it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording came from Hale\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s voice was older than on the 1999 tapes.<\/p>\n<p>Still young.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-nine.<\/p>\n<p>He was furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promised she stays untouched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sent someone into her apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Hale said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to know whether Arthur left records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou searched her home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile she was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas breathed hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do it again, I walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalk where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell him everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think that protects her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you kill her after I expose you, every copy I have gets released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had already begun building dead-man protections by 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Hale asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat copies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas lied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know. That\u2019s the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there were no copies yet.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas bluffed.<\/p>\n<p>Hale believed enough of it.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The informant contract.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne name a year. She is never touched. Never approached. Never photographed inside her home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Samuel stops lying to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Hale laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s between brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s my uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he uses Mom\u2019s money again, I expose Northline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never used Eleanor\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used her grief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence seemed to fill the room twenty-two years later.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas knew.<\/p>\n<p>Even in 2004, he understood Samuel had manipulated me.<\/p>\n<p>But he still believed Samuel when told I rejected him.<\/p>\n<p>People can recognize someone\u2019s dishonesty and still believe the lie that hurts most.<\/p>\n<p>Hale asked Thomas:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not knock on her door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if she looks at me the way she looked at my father\u2019s coffin, I won\u2019t be able to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my face.<\/p>\n<p>Hale replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t give her the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That was the sin beneath so much of this.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t give her the choice.<\/p>\n<p>Hale\u2019s philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s habit.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone deciding what another person should be allowed to know.<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew not giving you a choice was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he still did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned against my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019m learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen received another message.<\/p>\n<p>A team searching the nursing-facility archive had located records of Hale\u2019s payments to Carlos Mendez\u2019s killer.<\/p>\n<p>The killer was not Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He was alive.<\/p>\n<p>A former Hale enforcer named Raymond Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents were moving to arrest him.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered for Carlos\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps they would finally know.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we tell them about Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the threat against you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven that he sent money later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we are done choosing which pieces other people can handle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then Andrew\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Chen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nursing facility has another underground room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonal files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine. Rossi\u2019s. Samuel\u2019s.
