You don\u2019t get to use me as an excuse anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I saw Arthur in his grief.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel said, \u201cThe ledger is inside Hale\u2019s church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought I misheard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat church?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaint Matthew\u2019s Community Fellowship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name was familiar.<\/p>\n<p>A large independent church outside Tacoma.<\/p>\n<p>Hale had funded renovations, homeless programs, addiction counseling.<\/p>\n<p>His photograph appeared in newspapers beside mayors and police chiefs.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel gave a dry laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built his reputation there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the memorial wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat memorial wall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale\u2019s wife died eighteen years ago. He built a stone chapel in her name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd hid criminal records inside it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hid the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Thomas asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were working with my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blackmailed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped destroy his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then you helped him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can be guilty and useful at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had learned that lesson too.<\/p>\n<p>I was beginning to despise it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Thomas trust you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t. That\u2019s why I was useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel explained.<\/p>\n<p>After Marcus\u2019s arrest, Thomas contacted him under a false name.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Samuel still laundered some of Hale\u2019s payments.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas threatened to expose him unless Samuel copied Hale\u2019s accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel did.<\/p>\n<p>Then hid the original ledger inside the chapel, where Hale would never search because nobody else knew Samuel had stolen it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Thomas retrieve it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted Hale exposed with the ledger still connected to the place where his public reputation was strongest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat gives us probable cause now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward the evidence photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hard drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can decrypt it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father used Arthur\u2019s birthday as the first password.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>February 3, 1945.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah whispered the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Chen called the forensic team.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later, his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>The first password worked.<\/p>\n<p>There was a second.<\/p>\n<p>The screen displayed a hint.<\/p>\n<p>THE PERSON I CAME HOME FOR.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s face crumpled slightly.<\/p>\n<p>She typed one word into Chen\u2019s phone for the technician.<\/p>\n<p>ELEANOR.<\/p>\n<p>The drive opened.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of files appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Audio recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Bank transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping records.<\/p>\n<p>And a folder labeled SAINT MATTHEW.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a scanned image of Hale\u2019s private account book.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for a warrant.<\/p>\n<p>By dawn, officers and federal agents were preparing to enter the church.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that was the end of the night.<\/p>\n<p>Then the forensic technician opened Thomas\u2019s final video.<\/p>\n<p>He sat before the camera, visibly ill.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was weak but steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, if you\u2019re watching this, Hale followed the path exactly the way I hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed both hands against the table.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked directly into the lens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Samuel is still alive, do not let the police take him away yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert Hale is not the person who ordered Dad\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale covered it up. Hale profited. Hale threatened us.
