He hid. He paid you every month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know about the payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t paying me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money Thomas sent wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rossi had told us otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was it for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward Chen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy route it through you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Thomas didn\u2019t know Hale\u2019s real identity. I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Rossi say you were blackmailing him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Rossi worked for Hale long before she ever met Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A state officer entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLieutenant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen stepped aside to receive an update.<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Rossi had regained enough strength to speak.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted protection.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, she would identify Robert Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Not his alias.<\/p>\n<p>His real name.<\/p>\n<p>Chen put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Rossi\u2019s breathing came ragged through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied to Thomas too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah moved beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe threat never ended when Marcus was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rossi was silent for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then she gave us a name none of us recognized.<\/p>\n<p>Chen did.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it in his face.<\/p>\n<p>He immediately muted the call and turned to an officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContact federal organized-crime intelligence.
