T&amp;E can legally establish ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it could be nothing,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it could be trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz\u2019s investigation moved along a different track.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden account might explain the old transfers, but it did not explain the forged amendment, the fake attorney, the missing journal, or the man we believed was Arthur mailing a package under my name.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, the account gave Arthur a stronger reason to reappear.<\/p>\n<p>He was listed as controller.<\/p>\n<p>Without him, accessing the funds would be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>With him, it might be industrial district.<\/p>\n<p>The license plate was stolen.<\/p>\n<p>The car itself had been purchased for cash under a false name.<\/p>\n<p>But inside police found a receipt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They had identified the device used to delete the history.<\/p>\n<p>Graham\u2019s old tablet.<\/p>\n<p>It had been kept in a kitchen drawer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone in the house could have used it,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr someone who entered the house,\u201d Martin added.<\/p>\n<p>The tablet did not require a passcode inside the home network.<\/p>\n<p>A mistake so ordinary that none of us had considered it dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was the deletion?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo twelve in the morning, six days before you moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny sign of entry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo forced entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone had a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Possibly.<\/p>\n<p>Or someone had been invited inside.<\/p>\n<p>That possibility hung unspoken.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz turned toward Paige.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone visit that night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cService workers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at me like you\u2019re waiting for me to remember another lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The marriage had become a room filled with broken glass.<\/p>\n<p>Every step risked another cut.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz ended the interview soon afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Paige asked to to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A breeze moved through the leaves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want you gone because I hated you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I should have said it honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI resented you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me less than she expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause everyone loved having you there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids came to you first. Graham asked your opinion. You cooked better than I do. You remembered everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how petty it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like a guest in my own family sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause what was I supposed to say? Please be less wonderful to my children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assure you, there were days they found me considerably less wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>Then the smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI turned resentment into a practical problem. The room. Owen. Pine Harbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd once you made it practical, you didn\u2019t have to admit it was emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood that too well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you felt this way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of all the dinners.<\/p>\n<p>All the school pickups.<\/p>\n<p>All the times Paige thanked me while perhaps wishing she did not need to.<\/p>\n<p>We had both been living inside arrangements we had never honestly discussed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have asked whether I was intruding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were grieving. We invited you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvitations can change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we should have talked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I believed the apology.<\/p>\n<p>It did not repair everything.<\/p>\n<p>But repair begins with material that is real.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>He asked me to return to his office immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When Paige and I arrived, Graham was already there.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had documents spread across his conference table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the institution holding the Harbor account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBalance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust under four point eight million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I had won eleven million dollars on a two-dollar ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, hearing four point eight million attached to Thomas\u2019s old work shocked me more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat belongs to T&amp;E?\u201d Graham asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the historical documents, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Mom can claim it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Arthur Bell remains the registered controller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA legally dead man controls five million dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems like something banks should notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account passed through several institutions and jurisdictions.
