No obvious mistake I could seize upon and use to dismiss the whole thing as amateur fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had packaged my dead husband\u2019s missing journal inside a house I owned, or wanted us to believe they had, then sent it to a man Thomas had distrusted for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me that,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Martin handed me the photograph instead of the original evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The shipping label had been printed. Two days later Thomas said he had fired him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then Arthur vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did Arthur say when you refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memory returned with uncomfortable clarity.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur standing beside our old kitchen door.<\/p>\n<p>Rain on his coat.<\/p>\n<p>His black-stone ring tapping against the folder in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>He had looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Or wanted me to think he was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Thomas was protecting someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth waited.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he said, \u2018When this finally comes apart, Evelyn, ask yourself why Thomas was willing to lose everything for Graham.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth sat back.<\/p>\n<p>The room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had later protected Graham from Victor\u2019s threat.<\/p>\n<p>At the time Arthur spoke, I knew nothing about the forged checks.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about Victor\u2019s recording.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about the money routed through my son\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Had Arthur known?<\/p>\n<p>More troublingly, had Arthur been involved?<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn, Ortiz found something in Thomas\u2019s journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA list of payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re marked A.B.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than Victor ever took.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much, Martin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust over six hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a note beneath the total.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin read the meaning rather than Thomas\u2019s exact words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas believed Arthur knew where the money had gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one final notation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas wrote that if he died before recovering it, the answer was in the first property T&amp;E ever bought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat property?\u201d Martin asked.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>A neglected duplex Thomas and I had purchased before Graham was born.<\/p>\n<p>We sold it decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>Or thought we had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cthat property was on Mercer Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely get the words out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe duplex wasn\u2019t the first thing T&amp;E bought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Thomas smiling when he signed the papers, telling me that one day the useless little purchase might surprise us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn empty parcel behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the cottage window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I know, we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11989\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Thomas\u2019s Old Ledger Sent Us to a Forgotten Piece of Land Where Someone Had Been Digging Long Before We Arrived<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The label stayed in Martin\u2019s hand.
