door,\u201d Victor said.<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was older than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>But framed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling the detective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor could apparently hear me through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Martin I still have Thomas\u2019s ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every thought in my head stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin heard through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him what he means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Victor answered, \u201cThe green fishing journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why I came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger overrode fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he said, \u201cMay I put something through the mail slot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can leave it on the porch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paper rustled.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps retreated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m standing at the gate,\u201d he called.<\/p>\n<p>I moved cautiously toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>He was telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>An older man stood beneath the streetlamp.<\/p>\n<p>Gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>Dark jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Hands visible.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Lane.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years older, but still recognizable.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until Martin told me police were on their way.<\/p>\n<p>Then I opened the door only far enough to retrieve the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Thomas\u2019s green journal lying beside that day\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>On top of the journal was a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Ask who emptied the nightstand before Paige found the box.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked toward Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He remained beside the gate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone contacted me six weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man who said Thomas left papers implicating me in theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s jaw shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas and I disagreed about what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you\u2019d say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it is true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward the road as headlights approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not here to retry twenty-year-old details?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payments made under Graham\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho contacted you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used an encrypted email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou to trust you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least he had not lost his sense of irony.<\/p>\n<p>The headlights turned into my driveway.<\/p>\n<p>A police car.<\/p>\n<p>Victor did not run.<\/p>\n<p>That unsettled me more than if he had.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers approached him.<\/p>\n<p>Another came to my porch.<\/p>\n<p>Within minutes, the quiet cottage I had bought for peace was bright with radios, flashlights, and questions.<\/p>\n<p>Martin arrived soon after.<\/p>\n<p>So did Graham.<\/p>\n<p>I had specifically told him not to come.<\/p>\n<p>He came anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Some habits run both directions.<\/p>\n<p>Victor was not arrested immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He agreed to go to the station voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he asked to speak to me one final was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why should I listen to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Thomas made one mistake bigger than trusting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger flared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted the wrong person after he stopped trusting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold me what?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>Victor nodded toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Martin who replaced me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho replaced Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name meant little at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then memory moved.<\/p>\n<p>A quiet man.<\/p>\n<p>Thin glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Always early.<\/p>\n<p>Handled bookkeeping for roughly two years.<\/p>\n<p>Left suddenly after Thomas became ill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur died,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Martin shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to his funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou attended a memorial service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was presumed dead after a boating accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresumed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo body was recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas never believed Arthur drowned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers exchanged glances.<\/p>\n<p>Graham had gone completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Arthur have to do with the journal?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Victor replied, \u201cThe man who sold it to me used a voice scrambler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached into his pocket slowly.<\/p>\n<p>One officer moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Victor raised both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWallet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer removed it for him.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>The officer opened it.<\/p>\n<p>An old business card.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell.<\/p>\n<p>T&amp;E Property Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Controller.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat card was inside the package with Thomas\u2019s journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you receive it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho sent the package?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the part you won\u2019t like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe return address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer handed the label photograph to Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He showed me.<\/p>\n<p>The sender\u2019s address was Graham\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>The same property where the forged trust amendment had been found.<\/p>\n<p>And
