I noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat came out badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt came out accurately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to know what he said about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Graham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t show me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he says the letter is private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Paige\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>The anger thinned, leaving something closer to fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Thomas dislike me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would he warn Graham about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not warn Graham about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said my name is in the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again toward Thomas\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>There was one line I remembered exactly in meaning, though I had long ago stopped needing the paper to hear his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas wrote that you were strong,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd that Graham admired strength so much he sometimes surrendered his own judgment to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said strength is not the problem. Surrender is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing became unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cGraham thinks I called a lawyer to take your money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know whether to believe it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called because I was scared,\u201d she continued. \u201cI asked what rights we had as tenants. Then I asked a stupid question about Thomas\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether Graham had possibly been entitled to something that had been overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is quite specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you think anything was overlooked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Graham\u2019s things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me what it says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She inhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has Thomas\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed suddenly colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA trust amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>There had been no trust amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Not one bearing both our signatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige,\u201d I said, \u201cdo not touch it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a file box from your old room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My old room.<\/p>\n<p>The shelves.<\/p>\n<p>The winter coats.<\/p>\n<p>The papers I had assumed belonged to Graham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat after Thomas\u2019s death, Graham was supposed to receive control of T&amp;E Property Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not show it to anyone. Do not copy it.
