The nurse on duty signed them.<\/p>\n<p>The forms were stored inside the patient\u2019s medical folder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s folder had disappeared the night he died.<\/p>\n<p>It returned the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>The visitor sheet was missing.<\/p>\n<p>The forged note suddenly made terrible sense.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had used the sheet for signatures and medical details.<\/p>\n<p>Mark knew Rachel\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>He knew when Dad had been conscious.<\/p>\n<p>He knew enough to construct a believable document.<\/p>\n<p>But he chose a signing time after Dad had already lost consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>Nora pressed a button beneath the table.<\/p>\n<p>Two detectives entered.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Lena Ortiz introduced herself.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou set me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Nora said. \u201cWe preserved evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz told Mark he was free to leave but asked whether he would answer questions concerning Walter Hail\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>Nora stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe documents stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark resisted for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>The security officer moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Mark released them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis family has turned against me because of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You turned against us because of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he headed toward the door, Ortiz asked one last question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you between eight thirty-eight and eight forty-four the night Walter died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParking garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan anyone verify that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at Diane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked whether Diane had been at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Diane said she waited in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel produced another visitor record.<\/p>\n<p>A temporary badge had been issued to Diane at 8:06.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stared at her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you were home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane tightened both hands around her purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want you worrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you enter Walter\u2019s room?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detectives let them leave.<\/p>\n<p>I could not understand it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re letting them go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have suspicious evidence,\u201d Ortiz said. \u201cNot enough yet to prove who disconnected the machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was beside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel didn\u2019t see him touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe forged Dad\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have an examiner establish that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspicion isn\u2019t proof of murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murder.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing the word made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked permission to obtain Dad\u2019s complete medical records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may need an autopsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The thought of opening Dad\u2019s grave felt unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered his letter.<\/p>\n<p>Trust the facts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached into her bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She removed a padded envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were twenty-five thousand dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Three days after Dad died, someone had left it in her mailbox with a typed warning telling her to forget what she had seen and describe the ventilator problem as equipment failure.<\/p>\n<p>A withdrawal receipt remained attached to the bank wrapper.<\/p>\n<p>The cash had been withdrawn at 7:32 the night Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Less than an hour before Diane arrived at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz sealed everything into evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we trace the withdrawal, we may identify whoever tried to buy Rachel\u2019s silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes the most obvious suspect is guilty. Sometimes someone benefits from making him look guilty. We follow evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening Melissa came to my hotel.<\/p>\n<p>She sat on the second bed, scrolling through years of family messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom knew something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied about the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied about witnessing your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe let Mark put my name on that note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked whether Mark had ever discussed Dad\u2019s medical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa searched her messages.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA month ago he asked me about ventilators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to know whether someone could survive if one stopped working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he saw it on television.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Diane called.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa rejected it.<\/p>\n<p>A voicemail followed.<\/p>\n<p>Diane warned her not to believe me or Rachel and said Mark had only been trying to protect the family.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa deleted the message.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:30, Ortiz called.<\/p>\n<p>The bank had traced the cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark\u2019s account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The withdrawal came from an account belonging to Richard Bell.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard the name.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning Samuel summoned me to his office.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz was already there.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s old cell phone sat on the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had recovered it from Dad\u2019s safe-deposit box.
