Diane. Melissa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora added two more names.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s email claimed I had signed before the funeral and was too overwhelmed by grief to handle the remaining details. He instructed Samuel to deal with him directly and transfer half the trust assets as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>I read the message slowly.<\/p>\n<p>He was not merely forging my consent.<\/p>\n<p>He was building an explanation for why nobody should verify it with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may,\u201d Nora said. \u201cBut first I want the original forged document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask him to bring it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel emailed Mark that the original assignment and all company formation records had to be presented Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>He would be there.<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask whether I would.<\/p>\n<p>Nora told me to behave normally.<\/p>\n<p>I drove home with a copy of the forged agreement hidden beneath the spare tire in my trunk.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s funeral flowers filled the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>Mark sat watching television.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel emailed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself not to react.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants the company records Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you the agreement would solve everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat opposite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you create MDC?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-fifty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Diane and Melissa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey might get tiny interests later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another lie.<\/p>\n<p>He reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know I\u2019d never hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His thumb brushed my wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the signature he had copied.<\/p>\n<p>That night I waited until his breathing deepened.<\/p>\n<p>Then I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Our tax-return folder was missing from the filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of my driver\u2019s license were gone.<\/p>\n<p>My passport remained in the safe, but someone had moved it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s old leather briefcase sat nearby.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s house listings.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s business plan.<\/p>\n<p>A Florida retirement-community brochure.<\/p>\n<p>Then a document titled DISTRIBUTION PLAN.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s estate had been divided into percentages.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s retirement received the largest share.<\/p>\n<p>MDC received another enormous portion.<\/p>\n<p>Diane got her house.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa got her business funding.<\/p>\n<p>My portion was labeled Personal Allowance.<\/p>\n<p>Two thousand five hundred dollars per month.<\/p>\n<p>Withdrawals above that amount required Mark\u2019s written approval.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed every page.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the briefcase was a letter from Mark\u2019s employer.<\/p>\n<p>The date was seven weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The company had terminated him after an investigation involving unauthorized expense reimbursements and falsified vendor invoices.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had not quit after Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>He had been fired while Dad was alive.<\/p>\n<p>For seven weeks he had dressed each morning, carried his briefcase out the door, kissed me goodbye, and pretended to go to work.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the inheritance gave him an explanation for staying home.<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you searched my things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for a funeral receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice had become quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard Mark angry before.<\/p>\n<p>This was different.<\/p>\n<p>His phone rang upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to get that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt two in the morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I sent the photographs to Nora.<\/p>\n<p>Her response appeared almost instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>I packed one bag.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came downstairs as I reached the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll manage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it away.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze dropped to my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me your passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe might need it Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel asked for identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA license might not be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Samuel can tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped between me and the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not thinking clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI buried my father today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why I\u2019m trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Headlights crossed the wall.<\/p>\n<p>A car stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa rushed toward the house, still wearing the black dress from the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to talk to Clare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Clare agreed to MDC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa held out her phone.<\/p>\n<p>She had messages from a family conversation between herself, Diane, and Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I had never been included.<\/p>\n<p>The messages began twelve days before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Mark insisted the company needed to be created immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Diane asked why.<\/p>\n<p>Mark said Walter did not have long.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa asked whether I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered that I would agree after everything was arranged because I always agreed eventually.<\/p>\n<p>Then Diane asked what would happen if Samuel interfered.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s response made my hands cold.<\/p>\n<p>He said he knew how I signed my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this before Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The husband I knew disappeared behind something harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s estate isn\u2019t compensation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter looked down on me for twenty-two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he had a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lunged for Melissa\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>She backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do? Report your brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Walter\u2019s trust protects you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt protects Dad\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth curved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll find out Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa drove me to the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Mark called forty-three times over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>I answered none.<\/p>\n<p>Monday morning, Nora placed Melissa and me in a side room connected to Samuel\u2019s conference room.<\/p>\n<p>A security officer waited outside.<\/p>\n<p>At ten, Mark arrived with Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Through a speaker, I heard him place the original forged agreement on the table.<\/p>\n<p>He told Samuel I had signed it in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>Diane claimed she had witnessed it.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked who owned MDC.<\/p>\n<p>Mark admitted he owned half, while Diane and Melissa each owned a quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Clare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe becomes an owner after the transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the side door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me I already owned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned.<\/p>\n<p>Shock crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then fear.<\/p>\n<p>Then anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, you shouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the person whose name is on the document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you watched me sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich pen did I use?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She could not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa entered.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to me, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora joined us and explained that the forged assignment would be preserved for investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Mark listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForget MDC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter owed me money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed another document on the table.<\/p>\n<p>A promissory note.<\/p>\n<p>One million eight hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Two witnesses had supposedly signed.<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel studied the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time do you claim Walter signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight forty-five the night he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter was already ventilated and unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe signed before things got worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Samuel said. \u201cAt six fifteen his hands were restrained to prevent accidental removal of medical equipment.
