The loan guarantee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas it been drafted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian has it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho prepared it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told him.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes this lawyer know Martha disputes the signatures and authorization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas Julian told the lawyer Martha has dementia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe started crying again.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told people Mom has dementia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said she has memory problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if she denies something later, he can say she forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison&#39;s expression became hard in a way I had not seen before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is extremely important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>For two years, every moment of uncertainty had been cultivated into evidence against her.<\/p>\n<p>Every forgotten password.<\/p>\n<p>Every document she had not read.<\/p>\n<p>Every hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had not merely relied on confusion.<\/p>\n<p>He had prepared to weaponize it.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas he told doctors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis lawyer. Maybe the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison immediately began typing.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe watched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserving your mother&#39;s medical records and documenting that she disputes any characterization of cognitive incapacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I need a doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Harrison said gently. \u201cNot because we think anything is wrong. Because Julian may claim something is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know he&#39;d go this far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it fixed anything.<\/p>\n<p>Because she had finally stopped asking ignorance to excuse her.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Julian want from you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe lowered her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get you alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you&#39;ll sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I won&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe&#39;s eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he&#39;ll lose everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison asked, \u201cWhat does everything mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe land. The company. The house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She corrected herself quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place we live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked toward the closed door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian thinks if the bank realizes the guarantee isn&#39;t valid, they&#39;ll accuse him of fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>His silence was eloquent.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe whispered, \u201cWill they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want them to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She seemed surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the truth established. What happens after that is not mine to invent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hate him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bluntness startled everyone.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut hatred isn&#39;t evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison gave me the faintest approving nod.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course there was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her bag.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, Harrison tensed.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pulled out a flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI copied files from Julian&#39;s computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy copy them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was deleting things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not plug that into anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took out an evidence envelope from his portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>I almost asked why he carried one.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>He probably carried three.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe placed the drive inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpreadsheets. Loan documents. Emails. Pictures of signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cMy signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found a folder with scans of your name written different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Forgery practice.<\/p>\n<p>Even without saying it, all four of us understood.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison sealed the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis goes to counsel and, depending on what it contains, possibly law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one file you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s a spreadsheet Julian kept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who gave him money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison asked, \u201cAmounts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTotal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than three million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Calder Ridge have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company account has almost nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air left the room.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had not simply borrowed eight hundred thousand from a bank.<\/p>\n<p>He had raised millions more from individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Using the house.<\/p>\n<p>Using the land.<\/p>\n<p>Using dinners.<\/p>\n<p>Using appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Using Mom&#39;s supposed assets.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly using documents with fabricated signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe whispered, \u201cNatalie, I think there are a lot of people who believe Julian has money he doesn&#39;t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison looked at the sealed flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>If the files were genuine, this was no longer primarily about getting Khloe and Julian out of the house.<\/p>\n<p>That problem had become the smallest one in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Julian know you copied this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he suspect?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A text.<\/p>\n<p>Tell your mother to stop talking to lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Another arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This is bigger than your family.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison saw my expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe read the messages over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Her face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not Julian&#39;s number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else has it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>You came home at the wrong time.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because I was suddenly thinking about the private lenders.<\/p>\n<p>The investors.<\/p>\n<p>The three million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The people who had already come to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had spent two years building a lie large enough to attract money.<\/p>\n<p>Now that lie was cracking.<\/p>\n<p>And apparently we were not the only people watching it happen.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11893\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Flash Drive Proved Julian Had Built His Fortune From Other People\u2019s Money, but One Name on the Investor List Changed the Fight Completely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Khloe called at nine fourteen the next morning.
