I was the funding party, though Mom was the beneficiary and primary account holder. If somebody had changed access credentials without her understanding what they were doing, Harrison would want to know.<\/p>\n<p>I had not spoken to Harrison Vance in almost a year. That was usually good news. He was the Austin attorney who oversaw my property, tax matters, and domestic assets while I worked abroad. Harrison was precise, unflappable, and deeply suspicious of informal arrangements involving expensive property.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on the second ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie. Tonight, not by marching in and throwing their belongings onto the lawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t planning that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paused too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison continued. \u201cWe do this properly. Ownership first. Occupancy status second. Financial records third. If they&#39;ve been controlling Martha&#39;s money, that becomes a separate issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have her debit card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey changed her banking password too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A longer silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Martha understand what happened to the monthly transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don&#39;t confront Julian about the money yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause right now he doesn&#39;t know what we know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows I&#39;m home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be helped. But don&#39;t tell him what you&#39;re investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the hotel doorway. Mom was sitting on the bed with the soup tray across her knees, watching television at low volume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorization from Martha to request records. I&#39;ll pull the deed, county filing, tax history, and anything tied to the property. You get some sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just flew halfway around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. I said get some. I didn&#39;t say you&#39;d succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We agreed to meet the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned to the room, Mom had put the spoon down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that a lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fear crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ll frighten Khloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you frightened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matters too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom picked at a loose thread on the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey weren&#39;t always like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, she said, Khloe and Julian had been grateful. They cooked dinner. Julian fixed a leaking sprinkler. Khloe bought flowers. When Julian&#39;s business problems became worse, the gratitude gradually turned into entitlement. They began hosting clients at the house because it looked impressive. Julian started introducing it as \u201cour place.\u201d He moved furniture without asking. Khloe replaced family photographs with decorations she preferred.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had objected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said I was being territorial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the first request for money. Julian needed help covering a business expense. Mom agreed. The second request was larger. When she hesitated, Khloe cried. Eventually Julian offered to \u201csimplify\u201d the finances by managing the debit card himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you let him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did he take?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer disturbed me more than a number would have.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued. Whenever she wanted groceries, she asked Khloe. Whenever she needed medicine, Julian wanted to know the cost. They began telling her the allowance I sent was needed for household expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat household expenses? There is no mortgage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectricity. Food. Repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree thousand dollars every month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they made me feel greedy when I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached across the small table and covered her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t greedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a beautiful house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a house. You were also entitled to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears gathered in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked startled by my answer.<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have told me. But the fact that you didn&#39;t doesn&#39;t give them permission to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds she said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cKhloe said you were tired of taking care of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hit harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you were working all those hours because we kept needing things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Austin glittered beneath us. Six years of my life had been organized around a single idea: work now, give Mom security, come home later. Somehow that sacrifice had been translated into resentment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ever tell you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ever suggest you were a burden?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why believe her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s answer was almost inaudible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you stayed away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not accusation. It&#39;s Khloe. We need to talk before you do something stupid.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders tightened immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That reaction told me more than the message.<\/p>\n<p>Another text arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Julian says you threatened to throw us onto the street. After everything we&#39;ve done for Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>We have legal rights. You can&#39;t bully us because you have money.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone face down.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cDon&#39;t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A fourth message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner tomorrow. 7 p.m. Come and we&#39;ll discuss this privately like adults.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re still having the party?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;ve been planning it for weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian won&#39;t cancel. Important people are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about my mother kneeling beside that bucket while Julian prepared to entertain guests.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pulled the preliminary property file,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deed is exactly what you said. Natalie Brooks, sole owner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s more. I checked the asset-management account. Nobody has ever paid you rent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo whatever story Julian plans to tell, he&#39;s not going to produce a lease or payment history with your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about her account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s tomorrow.
