You are not operating a vehicle."

"I'm fine."

"That's exactly what exhausted people say before sideswiping a mailbox."

I let her win.

We reached First Midwestern's downtown office shortly before two. Carl Mason was waiting in a conference room with a compliance officer named Nora Patel and a man introduced only as bank counsel, which told me the lender had already stopped treating the matter as a customer-service issue.

Nora was in her early fifties, composed and direct.

"We've placed a temporary hold on additional draws while we investigate the disputed guaranty."

"How much has already been drawn?" Lauren asked.

Nora looked toward bank counsel.

He nodded.

"One hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars."

The figure seemed oddly unreal.

Perhaps because numbers that large belonged in spreadsheets, not betrayals.

I folded my hands beneath the table so no one would see them tighten.

"Where did the money go?"

"Primarily to the business operating account."

"Primarily?"

Nora opened a folder.

"Several disbursements went directly to vendors identified in the loan application."

Lauren asked, "Legitimate vendors?"

"That is still being reviewed."

"Any payments to Rachel Brooks?"

Nora's eyes flicked toward me.

"We have one vendor matching the surname Brooks."

I felt cold.

"What name?"

"Brooks Strategic Media."

Rachel had never mentioned owning a company called Brooks Strategic Media.

Lauren remained expressionless.

"Amount?"

"Twenty-eight thousand dollars across four payments."

I closed my eyes briefly.

Rachel had told me she was helping Ethan with branding as a favor.

Twenty-eight thousand dollars was a generous definition of favor.

Nora continued.

"Mrs. Bennett, before we proceed, I need to show you the electronic guaranty."

She slid a printed document across the table.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Olivia Caldwell Bennett.

Below it sat a digital signature resembling mine.

Not perfectly.

But well enough.

I stared at it.

The person who produced the signature had studied me.

The loop in the O.

The compressed middle letters.

The long final stroke.

Lauren leaned closer.

"Is that your signature?"

"No."

"Similar?"

"Yes."

"Could it have been copied from another document?"

"Probably."

Nora turned to a second page.

"The authentication included a driver's-license image."

My license appeared on the page.

Not a photo of the physical card.

A scan.

"Where did they get that?" I whispered.

Lauren answered before anyone else.

"Your records."

I remembered the basement box.

Missing 2023.

Old insurance documents often contained identification copies.

Nora said, "The application was completed remotely. An email verification link was sent to an address represented as yours."

She read it aloud.

At first, it sounded plausible.

My first name.

My maiden surname.

A familiar email provider.

Then I saw the difference.

One extra period.

A constructed address.

Not mine.

Lauren immediately asked, "Who registered it?"

"We're obtaining that information."

"And what IP address submitted the guaranty?"

Nora looked toward counsel again.

"An address associated with a residential internet provider in Columbus."

"My home?"

"Not yours."

Lauren said, "Rachel Brooks's?"

"We can't state that yet."

I knew Rachel's neighborhood.

"Can you tell me the ZIP code?"

Nora did.

It was Rachel's.

My pulse quickened.

Lauren saw it.

"Recognize it?"

"Rachel lives there."

Nora made a note.

Then she slid another page toward us.

"This is where the process becomes unusual."

The document showed uploaded supporting materials.

Tax return.

Personal financial statement.

Bank statement.

Property information.

My house.

My accounts.

My assets.

All used to strengthen Ethan's credit application.

I looked at the stated value of my home.

It was nearly exact.

Someone had used a recent appraisal.

I had ordered one eighteen months earlier while reviewing insurance coverage.

Only three people knew where I stored it.

Me.

Ethan.

Rachel, because she had been at the house when the appraiser came and joked that she hoped I was secretly selling.

The betrayal seemed to keep finding new rooms inside my life.

Lauren asked Nora to preserve the entire application package in native electronic form, including metadata.

Then she pointed at a line near the bottom of the upload log.

"What is this?"

Nora looked.

"Document submission notification."

"Recipient?"

Nora's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"The system sent an automated confirmation when the final guaranty package was uploaded."

"To the fake Olivia address?"

"Yes. And a secondary administrative contact."

She turned the page around.

There it was.

Rachel's personal email address.

Not disguised.

Not misspelled.

Not hidden behind a company domain.

Rachel's actual email.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Lauren finally said, "Was she listed anywhere in the application?"

Nora searched the file.

"No."

"Authorized representative?"

"No."

"Borrower?"

"No."

"Guarantor?"

"No."

"Then why did she receive administrative confirmation?"

"We don't know."

I did.

Or thought I did.

Somebody had built a false version of me carefully enough to obtain financing, then made one stupid mistake.

They had forgotten to remove Rachel from an email field.

Lauren looked at me.

"Do you recognize that address?"

"Yes."

"Whose?"

"Rachel Brooks."

Nora wrote the answer down.

Bank counsel finally spoke.

"Mrs. Bennett, I strongly recommend you file an identity-theft report."

"I already spoke with police this morning."

"About this loan?"

"No. We didn't know it existed."

Lauren said, "They will shortly."

Nora continued reviewing the application.

"Ethan represented that the guarantor had full knowledge of the transaction."

"I didn't."

"He also represented that household assets were available to support the business."

"They weren't."

"He listed the residence."

"My residence."

Lauren corrected gently, "Your separate-property residence, subject to whatever marital claims might later be asserted."

"Right."

Nora looked uncomfortable.

Banks dislike discovering that the foundation beneath a loan may be imaginary.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's another item you should see."

She produced a personal financial statement bearing my name.

My salary was accurate.

My retirement balance was nearly accurate.

My investment account was understated by only a few thousand dollars.

The document had been prepared by someone who knew my finances intimately.

At the bottom was a declaration certifying everything as true.

Another fake signature.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then something caught my attention.

"Wait."

Lauren followed my finger.

A listed liability showed an auto loan.

I had not had an auto loan in six years.

But Rachel did.

Or had.

The amount looked familiar.

She had complained repeatedly about the remaining balance on her SUV.

"That's not mine."

Nora checked her notes.

"What isn't?"

"This vehicle loan."

"Could it belong to Ethan?"

"No."

Lauren looked at me.

"Rachel?"

"I think so."

The room went still again.

If Rachel's debt had accidentally been inserted into my fraudulent financial statement, then whoever prepared it might have combined information from separate files.

Lauren turned to Nora.

"We need the original document metadata."

"You'll have to send a formal preservation request."

"You'll have one today."

Nora nodded.

The meeting continued for another hour.

By the end, the bank had formally noted my dispute, frozen further access to the credit facility, opened an internal fraud investigation, and agreed to preserve all electronic evidence.

When we stepped into the parking garage, I felt as though I had spent the afternoon inside somebody else's life.

Lauren unlocked her car.

"You're quiet."

"I'm trying to decide when they started."

"The affair?"

"All of it."

She placed her briefcase in the back seat.

"Don't force one timeline onto every act."

"What does that mean?"

"The affair could predate the fraud. The fraud could predate the affair. Or both could have developed together."

"I want to know."

"You will."

"I want to know today."

"You won't."

Her certainty irritated me because it was true.

We sat in the car without starting it.

I looked through the windshield at a concrete pillar.

"Rachel drove me to the airport on June seventeenth."

Lauren turned.

"The day the guaranty was signed?"

"Yes."

"Time?"

"My flight was at nine. She picked me up around six."

"And when was the guaranty executed?"

Lauren pulled out her notes.

"10:42 a.m."

We looked at each other.

Rachel had dropped me at the airport.

Three hours later, someone in her ZIP code signed my name to Ethan's loan.

My phone buzzed.

Another message from Rachel.

Liv, I don't know what Ethan told you but this has gotten completely out of control.

Lauren read it.

Then another came.

Please call me without him.

That was new.

Without him.

Lauren said, "Don't respond."

"I know."

A third message appeared.

There are things you don't understand.

I almost laughed.

Both of them had now told me that.

I typed nothing.

Then Rachel sent a photograph.

A hotel lobby.

Ethan stood in the background arguing with someone at the reception desk.

Rachel's caption read:

He is losing it. Please call me.

Lauren studied the image.

"She's separating herself from him."

"Why?"

"Fear. Strategy. Genuine conflict. We don't know."

I enlarged the photograph.

Ethan's face was turned partly away, but his posture was unmistakable. Shoulders rigid. One hand pointing at the desk.

The man who had texted from a beach as though twenty-three years could be canceled with one photograph now appeared trapped in a hotel because my credit had vanished.

Yet I felt no triumph.

Only disgust.

Lauren started the car.

"We need to make a police report about the loan."

"Agreed."

"And then I want you to search your cloud account for any access you don't recognize."

"I changed the password."

"Good. Now we look backward."

"For what?"

"Downloads. Logins. Shared files."

She glanced at me.

"If Ethan and Rachel were building a financial profile of you, they needed data."

My phone buzzed again.

This time the message came from Ethan.

Whatever Rachel is telling you, don't believe her.

Lauren looked at the screen and let out a quiet breath.

"Interesting."

Another message arrived before I could lock the phone.

She's trying to save herself.

I stared at the sentence.

Then Rachel's name appeared again.

Incoming call.

I declined it.

Seconds later, Ethan called.

I declined him too.

Lauren merged into traffic.

"They're turning on each other."

"Already?"

"They've lost access to money, the lender may be contacting Ethan, and they don't know what you've discovered."

I looked down at both names on my screen.

For twenty-three years Ethan had always been most dangerous when he believed he controlled the facts.

Now he had no idea what I knew.

Rachel didn't either.

And somewhere between Cancun, Columbus, a fake email account, and a quarter-million-dollar loan, the partnership that had destroyed my marriage was beginning to crack.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Rachel Finally Sent Me the Message Ethan Never Expected Me to See, and It Changed What I Thought Their Escape Was For

Lauren drove.
