I would prefer to give it directly to you, but I can send it through Melissa if that is more appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded it to Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>Her response:<\/p>\n<p>Your choice.<\/p>\n<p>I hated when everyone gave me choices.<\/p>\n<p>Choices meant responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually I agreed to meet Mark in a coffee shop.<\/p>\n<p>Public.<\/p>\n<p>Daytime.<\/p>\n<p>My own transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Old precautions remained useful even when they were no longer driven by panic.<\/p>\n<p>Mark arrived carrying a small black hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>His primary backup.<\/p>\n<p>The one Rachel\u2019s copied files had originated from.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the table between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe remaining archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought everything relevant was already disclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why do I need this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make it mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why give it to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some of it belongs to you and Hannah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecordings you made without permission do not become gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his hands together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke with my attorney. There are materials I have to retain separately. This is a personal copy. I wanted you to decide whether Hannah should ever have access to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate agreement irritated me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to hand me the moral responsibility for your archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying I\u2019m right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you actually want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that felt like another way of controlling the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years deciding what should be kept because I thought keeping it gave me control over what things meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touched the drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I destroy everything now because I\u2019m ashamed of it, that\u2019s still me deciding what survives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had not expected that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what are you asking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why am I here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some of the recordings are of you. Some are of Hannah. I thought you should know this copy still existed before I did anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, at least, was fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Hannah know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to ask you first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still asked me to decide what Hannah gets to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t see it until after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe should know the drive exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she should have a voice in what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because she gets to make every legal decision. Because much of what\u2019s on it is her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean for this specific thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor making both of you feel that your own memories needed my approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed differently.<\/p>\n<p>I did not forgive him.<\/p>\n<p>I did not tell him it was okay.<\/p>\n<p>I said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for saying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We told Hannah together during a therapeutic session.<\/p>\n<p>That was her request.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many copies are there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegal copies retained as required. This is the last personal archive I control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you want to delete it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah looked annoyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The therapist asked what she wanted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know what\u2019s on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah noticed both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot watch everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to see myself sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I want a list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA list?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what you saved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your notes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they\u2019re about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey already hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The therapist intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHannah, there may be value in understanding the archive, but there may also be material you cannot unsee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you hope to get?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know how much of my childhood got turned into evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had an answer to that.<\/p>\n<p>So they created an inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Not Hannah alone.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron assisted again.<\/p>\n<p>Files were categorized without requiring her to watch each one.<\/p>\n<p>Family videos.<\/p>\n<p>Private recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Audio.<\/p>\n<p>Screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>Notes.<\/p>\n<p>Documents.<\/p>\n<p>Professional consultations.<\/p>\n<p>Drafts.<\/p>\n<p>The inventory ran nineteen pages.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah read every line.<\/p>\n<p>She did not request most files.<\/p>\n<p>She selected twelve.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday video.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen recording.<\/p>\n<p>Several notes about her independence.<\/p>\n<p>The original coached messages.<\/p>\n<p>The Separation Response entries.<\/p>\n<p>Edward\u2019s recording.<\/p>\n<p>Her own essay from the silver drive.<\/p>\n<p>She asked Mark one question after reviewing them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you save Grandpa\u2019s recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it made him look paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why keep something where you sounded bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause part of me knew he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had spent years believing Edward\u2019s recording disappeared because Mark feared it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had feared it.<\/p>\n<p>But he had preserved a copy.<\/p>\n<p>Not publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Privately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d Hannah asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I kept things that threatened my version too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe because I knew I might need someone to prove me wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not defend it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t make it noble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the inventory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do with everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah immediately shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to make me responsible either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The therapist nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the things that belong to my story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twelve files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaterials that must legally be preserved stay preserved. Personal duplicates can be destroyed if everyone with a legitimate interest agrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Hannah.<\/p>\n<p>She thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelete the bedroom videos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sleeping ones first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd don\u2019t watch them again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do I know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s part of what I did. I made promises and expected you to treat the promise like proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know. You decide over time whether my behavior makes the promise believable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an answer I like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably why it\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deletion took place with Aaron documenting what was removed while preserving legally required evidence separately.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody held a ceremonial hammer.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody threw a drive into a lake.<\/p>\n<p>There was no dramatic destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Files disappeared from a personal archive.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when Aaron confirmed the bedroom recordings had been erased from Mark\u2019s personal copies, Hannah exhaled as though she had been holding air for two years.<\/p>\n<p>The twelve files she selected went onto a new drive.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah chose the label.<\/p>\n<p>NOT EVIDENCE.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed when I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark did too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubtle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned from Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRude,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one second, the three of us sounded like the family we had once been.<\/p>\n<p>Then the moment passed.<\/p>\n<p>That was okay.<\/p>\n<p>Not every good moment needed to become a promise about the future.<\/p>\n<p>After the session, Mark stopped me in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout twenty minutes farther away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted you to hear it from me before Hannah mentioned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apartment has a room for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>He saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because I expect her to live there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I relaxed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe picked the paint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat color?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently there are seventeen kinds of gray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to think preparing a room meant preparing an outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow it means there\u2019s a room if she wants it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether a father had a bedroom for his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether a mother worried when she left.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether a child loved one parent differently from the other.<\/p>\n<p>Meaning came from what people did with those facts.<\/p>\n<p>Months passed.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah turned fifteen.<\/p>\n<p>She celebrated with friends first.<\/p>\n<p>Mark attended later.<\/p>\n<p>No one demanded a family photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end of the party, Hannah gathered everyone beneath the maple tree at my house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPicture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma groaned.<\/p>\n<p>Jayden complained about his hair.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel held the cake.<\/p>\n<p>My mother tried to organize everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah looked toward Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet over here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood on one side of her.<\/p>\n<p>I stood on the other.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, history pressed against the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Her twelfth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The note.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of everything we later understood.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah handed Emma the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Hannah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFriends first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma took the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody recorded what it meant.<\/p>\n<p>Later Hannah sent it to both of us.<\/p>\n<p>Mark replied with a heart.<\/p>\n<p>I did the same.<\/p>\n<p>No one claimed the image.<\/p>\n<p>No one used it to prove we were healed.<\/p>\n<p>It was simply a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11749\">Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Years After Mark Tried to Control Hannah\u2019s Story, She Chose What the Ending Meant\u2014and Neither of Us Corrected Her<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hannah stayed the entire night.
