what?”

“Talking to your mother.”

I stared at her.

“How would Mark have that?”

“The recording appears to have been made inside your home.”

“What did I say?”

Melissa pressed play.

My own voice filled the office.

I was crying.

I recognized the conversation slowly.

My mother and I were in the kitchen.

Mark and I had argued the previous night.

On the recording, I said:

Sometimes I think Hannah and I would be calmer if it were just the two of us.

My stomach dropped.

The recording continued.

I said:

I love Mark, but I don’t know how much longer I can live like this.

Then:

If I ever leave, I’m taking Hannah with me.

Melissa stopped the audio.

I closed my eyes.

“I said it.”

“Yes.”

“I remember.”

“Context?”

“I was upset.”

“Anything else?”

“I wasn’t planning anything.”

“Did Mark know about the conversation?”

“I didn’t know he was home.”

According to the timestamp, he had recorded it months before the birthday video.

Before his documented questions.

Before Mrs. Donnelly.

Maybe this was the beginning.

Maybe Mark had heard me say I would take Hannah if I left and become afraid.

That did not excuse what followed.

But it changed something.

For the first time, I could see a possible fear underneath the machinery.

Melissa watched me.

“What are you thinking?”

“That he heard me.”

“Yes.”

“And maybe he believed I was going to take her.”

“Possibly.”

I swallowed.

“That matters.”

“It does.”

I hated how much it mattered.

Not because it made Mark right.

Because reality had become more complicated at the exact moment I wanted it simple.

Then Melissa continued.

“There’s a problem with the recording.”

“What?”

“It begins in the middle of the conversation.”

“So?”

“Mark submitted it as though this is where the relevant discussion starts.”

“Doesn’t it?”

“We don’t know.”

I remembered that day.

My mother had come over after Mark and I argued about a work trip.

What had I said before?

Fragments returned.

He keeps telling me Hannah will stop loving him if he travels.

He thinks everything is choosing sides.

Then something else.

Something important.

I stood.

“My mother.”

“What?”

“She was there.”

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“Mom, do you remember the conversation when I said Hannah and I might be calmer alone?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“What did I say before that?”

A longer silence.

Then my mother inhaled sharply.

“Oh.”

“What?”

“Claire, you were talking about Mark threatening to leave.”

My skin prickled.

“What did he say?”

“He told you that if you ever separated, he would make sure Hannah knew it was because you broke the family.”

The room went still.

“And what did I say?”

“You said you couldn’t keep living with every disagreement becoming a threat about Hannah.”

I gripped the phone.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Her voice changed.

“You said if you ever left, you would take Hannah because Mark had told you he would make her choose.”

I looked at Melissa.

The submitted recording began after that context.

“Mom, did Mark know you remembered this?”

“No.”

“Would you say it under oath?”

“Yes.”

Melissa was already writing.

Then my mother said something else.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“I think there was another recording device.”

My pulse jumped.

“What do you mean?”

“That day.”

She sounded uncertain.

“I saw
