Beneath it, smaller lettering announced the firm’s private launch reception. A hostess in black checked names against a tablet while waiters passed with champagne. I stood three places back in line and watched people enter a future financed partly with money Michael had withdrawn from ours.

When it was my turn, the hostess smiled. “Name?”

“Allison Davis.”

Her finger moved down the list and stopped.

“You’re on Ms. Jenkins’s guest list.”

Of course I was.

The hostess handed me a cream card embossed with the company initials and waved me inside.

The room was larger than I expected, filled with round cocktail tables, low arrangements of white flowers, and screens displaying investment language in elegant dark-blue type. On one wall, a looping presentation showed photographs of Manhattan, portfolios, glass towers, and words like stewardship, discretion, and trust.

Trust.

I nearly laughed.

Instead, I accepted a glass of champagne I had no intention of drinking and moved deeper into the ballroom.

Maya stood near the stage speaking to an older couple. She wore a dark green dress and the earrings she had eventually chosen, small diamonds that caught the light when she turned her head. Her posture was different from the woman who sat beside me at work. Straighter. More formal. She looked nervous but proud.

Michael was nowhere beside her.

For one irrational second, I was relieved.

Then I saw him across the room.

He stood with three men near the bar, one hand in his trouser pocket, shoulders relaxed, speaking with the contained confidence I had watched him use at dozens of professional dinners. His tuxedo fit perfectly. He was smiling.

I had seen him look that way at our wedding dinner.

Not the same clothes. Not the same room.

The same certainty that he belonged exactly where he was.

Michael turned.

Our eyes met.

Everything in his face disappeared.

Not slowly. Not subtly.

One second he was talking. The next, he was entirely still.

The man beside him continued speaking for several seconds before realizing Michael was no longer listening.

I did not move.

Michael excused himself.

He crossed the ballroom without hurrying, because people were watching and Michael understood appearances even while panicking.

“Allison.”

My name sounded strange in his mouth.

“Michael.”

His eyes moved briefly to my dress, my clutch, then behind me toward the entrance as if trying to determine whether I had come alone.

“What are you doing here?”

“Maya invited me.”

The color beneath his skin changed.

He recovered quickly.

“Maya?”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward the stage.

That was the moment I knew he had never imagined any connection between us.
