known.<\/p>\n<p>He had built the affair into the succession trap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Elizabeth was disqualified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cControl passed to the secondary trustee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan was next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad hated him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe structured it before he knew everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why not change that too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amendment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Elizabeth first, Nolan second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the earlier version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing amendment replaced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never read the final pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Nolan did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he didn\u2019t destroy it because?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever Charles changed, Nolan decided keeping the document was safer than losing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler looked toward Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan hid it where no investigator would search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn something legally protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis mother\u2019s coffin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn was still alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Then realization crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His heart monitor quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked frightened now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan told me six years ago he put it in his mother\u2019s coffin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn wasn\u2019t dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen whose coffin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler\u2019s breathing
