He wanted somewhere Nolan would never search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>A door.<\/p>\n<p>Kessler stopped breathing loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz whispered, \u201cMartin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, very quietly, \u201cThey found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line moved.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>A distant voice.<\/p>\n<p>Kessler whispered one final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe file is where Claire stopped being Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz immediately began issuing instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Trace the call.<\/p>\n<p>Notify patrol.<\/p>\n<p>Contact cellular providers.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere Claire stopped being Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour maiden name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you stop being Claire Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been Claire Mercer for twenty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDivorce filing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t filed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere you used your maiden name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind raced.<\/p>\n<p>College.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>Old accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Then a memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>After Dad died, I had spent one night in his workshop because I could not bear to go home.<\/p>\n<p>I had found an old wooden drafting table where he used to let me draw while he worked.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath, he had carved my childhood initials.<\/p>\n<p>C.E.B.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Elizabeth Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>My father used to call that corner of the workshop \u201cthe place before Mercer\u201d after I got married.<\/p>\n<p>A joke.<\/p>\n<p>A private one.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where the file is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s factory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main building was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat wasn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been locked for twelve years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz reached for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Two hours later, we stood inside my father\u2019s abandoned workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Dust lay thick across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The old drafting table remained beneath the north window.<\/p>\n<p>My childhood initials were still carved underneath.<\/p>\n<p>C.E.B.<\/p>\n<p>I crouched.<\/p>\n<p>There was no drawer.<\/p>\n<p>No compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Dad tapping the wooden leg whenever he joked about hiding emergency money.<\/p>\n<p>I ran my fingers underneath.<\/p>\n<p>A screw head.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca found a screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p>We removed the wooden panel.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a sealed plastic envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz photographed it before touching anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pulled it free.<\/p>\n<p>A flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Three documents.<\/p>\n<p>And a life-insurance policy.<\/p>\n<p>Insured: Charles Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Death benefit: $5,000,000.<\/p>\n<p>Policy owner: Mercer Health Consulting LLC.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiary: Mercer Health Consulting LLC.<\/p>\n<p>My forged signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca whispered, \u201cFive million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely hear her.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz turned to the second document.<\/p>\n<p>A transfer record.<\/p>\n<p>Five million dollars entered Mercer Health three weeks after my father died.<\/p>\n<p>Then almost immediately divided among several companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Vale International.<\/p>\n<p>Voss Medical Services.<\/p>\n<p>And one I had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>D.M.
