him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father wanted the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss told him the digitalis could be explained by medication error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Dad taking digitalis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it wasn\u2019t an error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Voss call the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I paid him not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me go cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bribed the doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo hide poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo stop an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is when someone dies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not die at the stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis interview is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not look away from Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took my father from the clinic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan\u2019s face lost what little color remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannot or will not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if I name him, you will never believe anything else I say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then he leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father left Dr. Voss\u2019s clinic with Martin Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man who had just entered Evelyn\u2019s hospital room.<\/p>\n<p>The man working through a company registered in my name.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my heartbeat in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was arguing with Voss when they left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw your father alive again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did he reach the hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan looked toward Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat,\u201d he said, \u201cis the question you should have been asking from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was Kessler working twelve years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan\u2019s eyes remained on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Dr. Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what capacity?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does a private doctor need security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Voss wasn\u2019t only a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said the words that gave every hidden company a different meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe moved money for people who could not afford to have their names attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA laundering network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my father discovered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>My father had not simply uncovered Nolan stealing from me.<\/p>\n<p>He had uncovered the system Nolan used to hide it.<\/p>\n<p>When I opened my eyes, Ortiz was already moving toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s in custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe officers transporting him never reached the station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost contact with the vehicle ten minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think he escaped?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked at Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think someone intercepted
