I hope that means I was simply too cautious. If it does not, trust the records, not anyone\u2019s explanation of them.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The words blurred.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned away, giving me what little privacy the basement allowed.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Your husband has been attempting to gain access to assets held in your name. This did not begin recently. I have uncovered documents indicating that Nolan Mercer has used falsified authorizations, shell companies, and forged signatures to move money belonging to other members of his family and possibly to clients.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>His face was unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>I have taken steps to protect your inheritance. Evelyn knows where the controlling documents are. Daniel Mercer has provided evidence that changes what I believed about the history between the brothers. I no longer believe Daniel was responsible for the disappearance of money from Mercer Industries.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>I need you to understand something that may be painful. Nolan has spent years learning what you will question and what you will forgive. That does not mean every memory you have with him is false. It means you cannot use affection as evidence of innocence.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began shaking harder.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hurt more than the financial records.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded like my father.<\/p>\n<p>Practical.<\/p>\n<p>Unsentimental.<\/p>\n<p>Precise.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Nolan said, \u201cHe was turning you against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He was controlling you from the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really can\u2019t help yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent twenty-five years out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen make it twenty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sound of approaching sirens became audible above us.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan heard them.<\/p>\n<p>His attention snapped toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>The expression on his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not panic.<\/p>\n<p>Calculation.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that look across conference tables and during arguments with contractors.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan was deciding which version of events would serve him best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire,\u201d he said, suddenly calm. \u201cWhen the police arrive, you need to be very careful what you say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man who tells everyone else what reality is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel crouched beside the box again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan said, \u201cDon\u2019t touch that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and I both looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He had reacted too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld business records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that was Mom\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned farther.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw my own initials.<\/p>\n<p>CM.<\/p>\n<p>Beside them were transfers beginning twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Not seven.<\/p>\n<p>The first occurred three weeks after my father died.<\/p>\n<p>$175,000.<\/p>\n<p>Then $220,000.<\/p>\n<p>Then $90,000.<\/p>\n<p>My breathing slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you access this before the trust transfer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father had investment accounts in your name before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were stealing from me before the inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came instantly.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed to the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was managing family assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy assets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat didn\u2019t make them yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved money without telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn companies you owned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave a tired laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know anything about my companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know more than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sirens stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>A car door slammed.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan stared toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the decision happen.<\/p>\n<p>He moved suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the steel box.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reacted first, grabbing Nolan by the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan swung his elbow backward and struck Daniel in the face.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stumbled into the wine rack.<\/p>\n<p>I rose, gripping the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lunged for the open box.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between him and the floor.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped inches from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what\u2019s in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped to the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Then to my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some things cannot be fixed once they become public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean crimes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the last fragile part of me still searching for an explanation finally give up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re worried about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried about all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The words landed.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps sounded above.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice!\u201d someone called.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan glanced toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wiped blood from his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the box.<\/p>\n<p>And before either of us understood what he was doing, he reached into his coat.<\/p>\n<p>I raised the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan pulled out a lighter.<\/p>\n<p>He flicked it on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He moved toward the papers.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lunged.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan shoved him away and dropped to one knee beside the box.<\/p>\n<p>I swung the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Not at him.<\/p>\n<p>At the lighter.<\/p>\n<p>The metal struck his hand.<\/p>\n<p>He cried out.<\/p>\n<p>The lighter flew across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers appeared at the bottom of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHands! Let me see your hands!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan froze.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lifted both hands immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped the tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>One officer moved toward Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife is having some kind of breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Even now.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the box open.<\/p>\n<p>Even with police watching.<\/p>\n<p>His instinct was still to make me the unreliable one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been under stress,\u201d Nolan continued. \u201cMy mother is dying. My brother, who has a long history of instability and fraud, showed up unexpectedly\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The officer silenced him with a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone stays quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan put his hands behind his head.<\/p>\n<p>As the officer secured him, he turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>His face was composed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not give them the recorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the basement went still.<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked at the steel box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recorder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He had made his first real mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, I reached into the box.<\/p>\n<p>The old digital recorder was beneath the first stack of documents.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted it.<\/p>\n<p>The officer asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s on that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan spoke from the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time he had said please all morning.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the recorder over.<\/p>\n<p>A strip of masking tape had been placed across the back.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s handwriting appeared again.<\/p>\n<p>OCTOBER 14 \u2014 N.M.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>One officer reached for the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Before handing it over, I pressed the power button.<\/p>\n<p>The screen flickered.<\/p>\n<p>Battery low.<\/p>\n<p>But alive.<\/p>\n<p>A single audio file appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Duration: 47 minutes, 12 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The officer said, \u201cMa\u2019am, don\u2019t play that here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Nolan said, \u201cClaire, I\u2019m begging you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard him beg.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed PLAY.<\/p>\n<p>Static filled the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Then my father\u2019s voice emerged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came here because I found the transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan\u2019s recorded voice became sharper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Claire finds out, you\u2019ll destroy her marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father replied without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Nolan.
