When a bill surprised me, he said I had forgotten discussing it. When I questioned a trip, he reminded me that he had supposedly mentioned it weeks earlier. Nolan\u2019s investment company. The years when he insisted cash was tight despite his expensive suits, upgraded cars, and constant travel. I thought of my father\u2019s estate documents spread across our kitchen table while I was still grieving too deeply to read them.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan had placed little adhesive flags beside the signature lines.<\/p>\n<p>I had signed wherever he pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long has he had access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven years.<\/p>\n<p>Seven years earlier Nolan had started Mercer Capital.<\/p>\n<p>Seven years earlier he had persuaded me to refinance our home.<\/p>\n<p>Seven years earlier he had begun traveling twice as often.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my fingertips against my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when I discovered what he had done, I thought I could repair it without destroying your marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou protected him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he stole from me and protected him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he had moved money. Three years earlier Nolan told me he had sold it because back taxes exceeded its value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing there anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied about that too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in the basement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I thought exhaustion had taken her.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cEverything he stole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse stumbled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her head moved faintly from side to side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that night, I saw fear in them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, promise me you will not confront him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not promising anything until you tell me what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he knows you have the key\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers suddenly seized mine.<\/p>\n<p>The monitor changed rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the emergency button.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors and nurses flooded into the room, forcing me backward. Someone told me to wait outside.
