the money was scheduled to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Merritt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold turned the screen toward us.<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiary name was hidden behind a holding company.<\/p>\n<p>But one detail was visible.<\/p>\n<p>The trustee.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Merritt Cole.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had not just been planning to enrich his brother.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the money was apparently meant to circle back through Emily.<\/p>\n<p>And if that was true, Thanksgiving had not merely been the night they kept me away from a family dinner.<\/p>\n<p>It had been the night they sat around a table discussing how to move money from a company I partly owned into their own family\u2019s
