Candles burned along a stone mantel. Somewhere deeper inside, glasses touched and people laughed. I could smell turkey, rosemary, butter, and the sharp sweetness of expensive wine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Not hello.<\/p>\n<p>Not Happy Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Just my name, spoken with the tired surprise reserved for a repairman who has arrived on the wrong day.<\/p>\n<p>I shifted the casserole dish against my palms. Ruth had bought it thirty-two years earlier at a church sale. One handle carried a small chip. The glaze had faded around the rim. I had considered transferring the sweet potatoes into something newer, but Daniel had eaten them from that dish every Thanksgiving since he was six.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope I\u2019m not too early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victoria\u2019s expression tightened. \u201cWhy are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second I thought she was joking.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard appeared behind her.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter-in-law Emily\u2019s father was wearing a charcoal jacket over an open-collared white shirt. Richard was the sort of man who could make casual clothes look like a uniform. He stopped when he saw me.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation behind them seemed to soften.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought the sweet potatoes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Richard glanced at the dish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have catering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. Daniel asked me last week if I was making these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victoria looked over her shoulder, as if checking whether anyone important was watching.<\/p>\n<p>Then she faced me again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four words.<\/p>\n<p>She said them quietly.<\/p>\n<p>That made them worse.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her. \u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dinner is for immediate family and a few guests from Richard\u2019s company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled because the explanation was so absurd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son is inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter-in-law is inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victoria crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stepped closer to the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucas, don\u2019t make this uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked past him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was standing at the far end of the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>My son had heard everything.<\/p>\n<p>He wore the navy sweater I had given him two Christmases earlier. Emily stood beside him, one hand resting on his arm. She looked away when our eyes met.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>For one hopeful second, I expected him to walk toward me.<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped behind his in-laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed his thumb along the side of his hand. He had done that since childhood whenever he knew he was about to disappoint someone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Emily told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat this year was different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked from him to Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard and Victoria are hosting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are business people here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited for the part that explained why that meant his father could not enter the house.<\/p>\n<p>It never came.<\/p>\n<p>Instead Daniel lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we talk outside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drove forty minutes. I\u2019m holding the dish your mother used to make every Thanksgiving. If there\u2019s something you need to tell me, tell me here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>That small glance told me more than any explanation could have.<\/p>\n<p>He was embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I had done something wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Because I was standing there in a brown work jacket beside a twenty-year-old pickup parked among German sedans and polished SUVs.<\/p>\n<p>Richard cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re expecting several people connected to Merritt tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merritt Development.<\/p>\n<p>His company.<\/p>\n<p>Richard spoke its name the way other men spoke of universities their grandfathers had founded.<\/p>\n<p>I had listened to him talk about it for years.<\/p>\n<p>He never once asked whether I knew anything about the business.<\/p>\n<p>That had always amused Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>It did not amuse me now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, please. They make the rules in their house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are sentences a parent remembers because they are funny.<\/p>\n<p>Others because they are kind.<\/p>\n<p>And a few because something inside you changes the moment you hear them.<\/p>\n<p>They make the rules.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my son.<\/p>\n<p>He was forty-one years old.<\/p>\n<p>For most of his life, I had mistaken his desire to be accepted for ambition. Now I saw something less flattering.<\/p>\n<p>He needed approval so badly that he had begun borrowing other people\u2019s judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>I held the casserole dish toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least take this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria intervened. \u201cWe really have more than enough food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He could have taken it.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I drew the dish back against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy Thanksgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody followed me.<\/p>\n<p>Cold air caught my face as I crossed the circular driveway. Through the tall windows I could see the dining room table, already laid with crystal, white linen, and silver.<\/p>\n<p>There was an empty chair near Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it belonged to somebody important.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed into my truck and put Ruth\u2019s casserole dish carefully on the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>For a while I did not start the engine.<\/p>\n<p>Three years earlier, Ruth had died in a hospital room with Daniel holding one hand and me holding the other.<\/p>\n<p>Her last Thanksgiving had been at our house.<\/p>\n<p>She had complained that Daniel mashed the sweet potatoes too aggressively. He had accused her of supervising him like a prison guard. She had laughed so hard she had needed to sit down.<\/p>\n<p>I could still hear it.<\/p>\n<p>That was the cruel thing about grief.<\/p>\n<p>The dead did not become vague.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they became sharper.<\/p>\n<p>I finally started the truck.<\/p>\n<p>As I backed away, I saw Daniel through the front window.<\/p>\n<p>He was watching me leave.<\/p>\n<p>He still did not come outside.<\/p>\n<p>At home, I put the casserole dish on the kitchen table and ate a turkey sandwich standing at the counter.<\/p>\n<p>My phone remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:17, Daniel texted.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry tonight got awkward.<\/p>\n<p>I read the message twice.<\/p>\n<p>Not cruel.<\/p>\n<p>Not malicious.<\/p>\n<p>Just cowardly enough to tell me everything I needed to know.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:46, another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll talk tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>I switched off the phone.<\/p>\n<p>The house was painfully quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth\u2019s photograph stood on the shelf beside the dining table. She was laughing at whoever had taken it\u2014probably me\u2014and sunlight had caught one side of her silver hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have gone back and argued,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph offered no opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou definitely would have taken the casserole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made me smile.<\/p>\n<p>I carried the blue dish to the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>Then the landline rang.<\/p>\n<p>Almost nobody used that number anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Harold Bennett immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had handled our investments for more than twenty years. These days his firm dealt with most of the paperwork, which suited me perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy Thanksgiving, Harold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou too.
