romance.

Exactly as promised.

Adrian retained counsel who had never represented Vale, his family, or me.

I retained Marcy.

Naturally.

The first draft of our marital agreement arrived four months later.

I read every page.

Then I sent back twenty-seven comments.

Adrian sent back thirty-four.

Marcy looked delighted.

“This is what healthy romance looks like?”

“No.”

“What?”

“This is what informed consent looks like.”

“Much sexier.”

She stared at me.

“Please leave.”

I laughed.

The agreement was not sentimental.

That was what I loved about it.

My assets remained mine.

Adrian’s remained his.

Any future jointly acquired property would be defined explicitly.

No family introductions, goodwill, relationship networks, or social access could be treated as compensable contribution to a business unless separately documented.

That clause was mine.

Adrian accepted it immediately.

His clause protected me from liability related to any historical Vale matter.

I noticed.

This time, it existed in the actual draft.

Not in his intention.

He also insisted that any future business involving one of us require written disclosure of the other person’s relationship to it.

No assumptions.

No implied access.

No “family alignment.”

When I read that phrase in his comment, I laughed.

Marcy did too.

Negotiation lasted two months.

There was no rush.

No venue deposit.

No date.

No guests.

At one point, Adrian’s lawyer proposed language I disliked.

I said no.

The clause disappeared.

Nothing collapsed.

No one sulked.

No one accused me of jeopardizing a future.

That experience was almost embarrassingly healing.

One evening, after another legal session, Adrian and I walked home.

“You know what’s strange?” I said.

“What?”

“This is more romantic than the rooftop proposal.”

He stared at me.

“Contract negotiation.”

“Yes.”

“That is deeply concerning.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I say no to something, you stay.”

He stopped walking.

The words affected him.

I had not intended that.

“Mara.”

“It matters.”

He looked down.

“I’m glad.”

“So am I.”

We continued walking.

No dramatic kiss.

Just his hand finding mine after I reached first.

The agreement was finalized in early spring.

We did not sign immediately.

Marcy insisted each of us wait thirty days after the final draft.

Adrian’s counsel agreed.

“Are lawyers always this determined to ruin momentum?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Excellent.”

During those thirty days, nothing changed.

That was the point.

We had dinner with Camille.

Visited Eleanor.

My father invited Adrian to lunch alone.

I nearly objected.

Then realized they were both adults.

“What did you talk about?” I asked Adrian afterward.

“He apologized.”

My eyebrows rose.

“For what?”

“Treating me like a risk to manage instead of someone you loved.”

That surprised me.

“And you?”

“I apologized for giving him evidence that he was right.”

I laughed.

“Productive.”

“We also discussed fishing.”

“You both hate fishing.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Apparently men require one unnecessary neutral subject after emotional honesty.”

I laughed harder.

My father later confirmed this theory.

Vivienne did not attend family gatherings often.

When she did, boundaries remained.

She apologized to me in person once.

No speech.

“I was unkind to you.”

“Yes.”

“I was threatened by you.”

“Yes.”

“I used your money without respecting you.”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled.

“You’re not going to make this easier.”

“No.”

“I understand.”

I raised an eyebrow.

She corrected herself.

“I accept that.”

Better.

“I am sorry.”

“Thank you.”

That was all.

I did not hug her.

She did not ask.

Progress.

Eleanor remained Eleanor.

When Adrian told her the agreement was finalized, she said, “Congratulations on completing paperwork that should have existed before your first wedding plan.”

“There was no first wedding,” Adrian said.

“There was an invoice avalanche.”

“That is fair.”

She looked at me.

“Have you decided?”

“About marriage?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe.”

“Coward.”

I smiled.

“You told me not to rush.”

“Not rushing and being evasive are different.”

“Why are you obsessed with this?”

“Entertainment.”

Of course.

The thirty days passed.

We signed.

Separate rooms.

Separate lawyers.

Then went to dinner.

No champagne.

No announcement.

Adrian looked nervous.

“Are you waiting for something?” I asked.

“No.”

“You are.”

“I’m trying not to.”

“That sentence makes no sense.”

“I thought signing would feel like permission to ask.”

My pulse changed.

“Does it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because permission still has to come from you.”

That answer mattered.

A week passed.

Then two.

No proposal.

I began to wonder whether he had decided against it.

That was uncomfortable.

Then useful.

Because it forced me to confront whether I wanted him to ask.

Not whether I was ready to answer.

Whether I wanted the question.

I did.

That realization frightened me for exactly one afternoon.

Then calmed me.

I did not tell him.

He deserved to ask without knowing the outcome.

Not because surprise was romantic.

Because he needed to risk hearing no.

Three weeks later, Adrian asked me to meet him at the first café.

The original one.

My entire body reacted before my mind did.

I nearly said no.

Then he wrote:

Only if the place itself does not feel unfair.

That was why I went.

The café had changed.

Different tables.

New paint.

Same window.

We arrived separately.

Adrian was already seated near the back.

Not at the table from years ago.

Good.

I sat across from him.

“You are terrifying me.”

“I know.”

I stared.

He winced.

“I understand why.”

“Better.”

He smiled.

No ring box.

I checked.

He noticed.

“There is no ring.”

“Good.”

“Yet.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Dangerous.”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“I asked you here because this is where I first chose not to tell you the truth.”

My chest tightened.

“I know.”

He nodded.

“And I don’t want our future built by pretending that beginning was something else.”

I waited.

“The first time I sat near you, I knew who you were.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted information.”

“Yes.”

“I liked you before I expected to.”

“Yes.”

“I lied by omission because I thought truth would make me lose access to you.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I kept doing versions of that for years.”

I said nothing.

“I loved you.”

Past tense did not appear.

“I love you.”

My eyes burned.

“But love did not make the deception less real.”

“No.”

“And the deception did not make the love unreal.”

“No.”

His hands rested flat on the table.

No hiding them beneath it.

“I am not asking you to erase either truth.”

I looked at him.

“I’m asking whether you want to keep building something with me while remembering both.”

My throat tightened.

“That sounds suspiciously like a proposal.”

“It is approaching one.”

I almost laughed through tears.

“Adrian.”

He breathed in.

Then out.

“I am not going to ask you to be my future wife.”

My chest tightened.

“I spent too long treating the future like something I could secure.”

He looked directly at me.

“I want to ask about the present.”

I waited.

“Do you want to marry me?”

Simple.

No speech afterward.

No ring.

No photographer.

No kneeling.

No audience.

No leverage.

A question.

Just a question.

I looked out the window.

Years seemed to exist at once.

The first coffee.

The restaurant lunch.

The canceled wedding.

The financial records.

Julian.

Eleanor.

Thomas.

Vivienne.

Dad.

Every truth we had excavated.

Every version of Adrian I had loved, feared, understood, rejected, and met again.

Then I looked back at the man sitting across from me.

Not potential.

Not history.

Now.

“Yes.”

His eyes closed.

One breath.

Then he opened them.

“Are you sure?”

I laughed through tears.

“That is an excellent follow-up question.”

“I’m serious.”

“Yes.”

He remained still.

“Yes, I am sure today.”

His expression softened.

“Today is enough.”

That answer confirmed mine.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

I smiled.

No one applauded.

A blender screamed behind the counter.

Someone dropped a spoon.

A child complained about whipped cream.

It was perfect.

Adrian reached across the table.

“Can I hold your hand?”

“Yes.”

I gave it to him.

We sat that way for several minutes.

Then I said, “Now you may buy a ring.”

He laughed.

“Together.”

“Obviously.”

“No surprise?”

“No.”

“Do I get any creative control?”

“Limited.”

“Cruel.”

“You survived.”

We chose the ring ten days later.

Together.

Small jeweler.

No giant diamond.

No family heirloom.

No symbolism imported from people who had already left enough history behind.

A simple oval stone with a narrow band.

I tried it on.

Adrian looked at me.

“Do you like it?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to think?”

“Yes.”

We left without buying it.

Two days later, I went back alone.

Tried it again.

Then called him.

“That one.”

He bought it.

Not secretly.

Not dramatically.

He gave it to me in my kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had discovered the first suspicious payment.

He held the box.

Then stopped.

“Would you like me to put it on you?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

He slid it onto my finger.

My hand trembled.

His did too.

No promises were spoken.

Not yet.

We had already made the important ones in documents, conversations, boundaries, and repeated behavior.

Camille found out within an hour.

I still do not know how.

She called screaming.

“I AM ALLOWED TO BE HAPPY.”

“You are dinner.

He hugged me.

Then Adrian.

That surprised everyone.

He said, “Do it quietly.”

I smiled.

“That is the before the ceremony, Adrian became unusually quiet.

I noticed during dinner.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Try again.”

He looked at me.

“I’m afraid.”

I put down my fork.

“Of marriage?”

“No.”

“What?”

“That one day you’ll know.”

“Some days I will remember the bad first.”

“Yes.”

“Some days you will too.”

“Yes.”

“That is not widened.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

A smile moved slowly across his face.

“My future wife.”

The phrase no longer felt like possession.

Because I had chosen it.

I kissed him.

Then said, “Future husband.”

He closed his eyes.

The words hit him harder than I expected.

When he opened them, his eyes were wet.

“That took a while.”

“You were difficult.”

“I was.”

“Still are.”

“Yes.”

“Coffee.”

“Right.”

He handed me the mug.

Normal morning.

Ordinary kitchen.

No away.

Everything was ready.

Then Marcy called.

Of course she did.

“I need to tell you something before you marry him.”

I stared at the ceiling.

“You are banned from dramatic openings.”

“This is not about Adrian.”

“Then who?”

“Eleanor.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“She revised her estate plan.”

“Fine.”

“You are named.”

I you.”

“Marcy.”

“She wants to give you something.”

“What?”

“The Hartford property.”

I stopped breathing.

The land at the center of the Vale family conflict.

The property Thomas and Vivienne borrowed against.

The property Eleanor refused to surrender.

The asset Adrian later used in financing representations.

The ground beneath decades of lies.

“She cannot give me that.”

“She can.”

“I do not want it.”

“Then you can decline.”

“Why me?”

Marcy paused.

“Eleanor authorized me to tell you her reason.”

“What?”

“She says every Vale who wanted Hartford saw it as leverage.”

I closed my eyes.

“And?”

“She wants to leave it to the one person who repeatedly refused to use it that way.”

My throat tightened.

“That is manipulative in its own Eleanor way.”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell Adrian?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“She wanted you to decide first.”

I sat down.

The old temptation appeared immediately.

Protect Adrian from discomfort.

Delay truth until I knew what to do.

Then I almost laughed.

No.

Never again.

“I’ll tell him tonight.”

“Good.”

“And I’m not accepting anything until we discuss it.”

“Also good.”

I ended the call.

When Adrian came home, I was waiting at the dining table.

He saw my face.

“What happened?”

“Eleanor wants to leave me Hartford.”

He stopped.

Just stopped.

Then he pulled out a chair and sat.

“Okay.”

I stared.

“That’s all?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want it?”

“No.”

“Then decline.”

I blinked.

“No resentment?”

He thought about it.

“Some.”

That honesty relieved me.

“Good.”

“I grew up believing that property would solve everything.”

“Yes.”

“Then I learned what believing that did to everyone.”

He looked at me.

“If Grandmother gives it to you, it is yours.”

My chest tightened.

“That simple?”

“It
