don’t.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because I don’t want to assume.”

That answer mattered.

A lot.

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“Yes what?”

“Yes, we are dating.”

He smiled.

I pointed.

“That is an acceptable happiness face.”

“Thank God.”

I laughed.

When he walked me home, we stopped outside my building.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Adrian said, “Can I kiss you?”

My throat tightened.

The first time he kissed me, two years earlier, he had done it impulsively outside the coffee shop.

I had loved that.

Now I loved the question more.

“Yes.”

He kissed me gently.

No urgency.

No possession.

No attempt to turn one kiss into certainty.

When we separated, he rested his forehead briefly against mine.

Then stepped back.

“Good night.”

“Good night.”

I went upstairs.

I did not feel nineteen.

I did not feel swept away.

I felt chosen.

More importantly, I felt like I had chosen too.

That should have been the end of the difficult part.

It wasn’t.

Because rebuilding with Adrian meant eventually facing the one subject we had carefully avoided.

Marriage.

Not engagement.

Not weddings.

Marriage itself.

The subject arrived unexpectedly at Camille’s birthday dinner eight months later.

Someone at the next table proposed.

Applause filled the restaurant.

Camille groaned.

“Public proposals should require permits.”

I laughed.

Adrian did not.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Neither spoke.

Later, in the car, he said, “I’m not going to ask.”

“I know.”

“Stop.”

I smiled.

“I understand.”

He stared through the windshield.

“I think about it.”

My pulse changed.

“Marriage?”

“Yes.”

“So do I.”

He looked at me.

“That scares me.”

“Good.”

He laughed softly.

“What do you think about?”

I answered honestly.

“Whether I could ever wear a ring from you without remembering everything.”

His expression tightened.

“And?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

“What do you think about?”

“Whether asking you again would automatically turn what we have into a test.”

That was exactly my fear.

“If I said no?”

“I would stay.”

I stared.

“You say that now.”

“Yes.”

“Would you?”

“I hope so.”

Not certainty.

Hope.

Better.

“I don’t want marriage to become evidence that you forgave me.”

“It cannot.”

“I know.”

I gave him a look.

He smiled.

“I understand.”

“And I do not want refusing marriage to become evidence that I don’t love you.”

“It won’t.”

“How can you know?”

“I can’t.”

Good.

We drove the rest of the way quietly.

At my building, he kissed me once.

Then left.

No pressure.

No hidden ring.

No accelerated timeline.

A week later, Eleanor called.

“You two are discussing marriage.”

I stared at the phone.

“Camille.”

“Yes.”

“Traitor.”

“She is improving, not transformed.”

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“That is never true.”

Eleanor sighed.

“I want to tell you one thing.”

“Fine.”

“Do not marry Adrian because he has become better.”

“I wouldn’t.”

“Do not refuse him because he once was worse.”

I was quiet.

“Then what?”

“Decide based on whether the man who exists now fits the life you want now.”

That sounded almost annoyingly simple.

“What about history?”

“History informs.”

She paused.

“It does not vote.”

I smiled.

“You have become sentimental.”

“Age is humiliating.”

She hung up.

I sat with her words.

History informs.

It does not vote.

Then I looked at the life Adrian and I had built over the previous year.

No shared business.

No financial dependence.

No family leverage.

No public performance.

No promises extracted under pressure.

Just repeated choices.

Coffee.

Dinner.

Arguments handled without threat.

Truth offered before discovery.

Space given without punishment.

It was not dramatic.

It was better.

Three weeks later, I asked Adrian to come over.

My apartment.

The place he had once entered with a code he assumed would always work.

Now he stood outside and rang the bell.

I opened the door.

He did not step inside until I moved aside.

I noticed.

“Come in.”

He did.

We sat at the same dining table where I had first examined the wedding accounts.

That fact felt almost too symbolic.

But life did that sometimes without permission.

Adrian looked nervous.

“You said you wanted to talk.”

“Yes.”

“About?”

“Marriage.”

He stopped breathing.

I raised a hand.

“Do not react yet.”

“Right.”

“I am not asking you to propose.”

“Okay.”

I gave him a look.

“Sorry.”

I continued.

“I think I could marry you.”

His eyes filled immediately.

I hated how much that affected me.

“But.”

He laughed quietly through his breath.

“There it is.”

“But I will never participate in another wedding like the one we planned.”

“Neither would I.”

“No strategic guests.”

“Yes.”

“No family spectacle.”

“Yes.”

“No press.”

“Yes.”

“No investors.”

“Absolutely.”

“No announcement.”

“Yes.”

“No hundreds of people.”

“Yes.”

“No wedding that becomes a referendum on whether we repaired ourselves.”

His expression softened.

“Yes.”

“And no engagement until every financial document is complete first.”

Adrian laughed.

“A prenup before the proposal?”

“If there is one.”

“Fair.”

“And independent counsel.”

“Yes.”

“And months to review.”

“Yes.”

“And if I hate one clause, we discuss it before anyone orders flowers.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“I want boring.”

He smiled.

“How boring?”

“Painfully.”

“I can do painful.”

“That is not reassuring.”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“What do you want from me right now?”

“Nothing.”

He nodded.

I reached across the table.

Took his hand.

“I just wanted you to know marriage is not impossible.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“Thank you.”

“No proposal.”

“No proposal.”

“No shopping for rings.”

“No rings.”

“No telling Camille.”

He hesitated.

“That one may be difficult.”

“Adrian.”

“No telling Camille.”

“Good.”

He left an hour later.

No ring.

No scheme.

No future-husband joke.

Three days afterward, Camille called.

“Mara.”

I closed my eyes.

“He told you.”

“No.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Grandmother did.”

I stared.

“I did not tell Eleanor.”

“Adrian did.”

I covered my face.

“Your family is impossible.”

“Yes.”

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

“I wanted to say I’m happy.”

My anger softened.

“Thank you.”

“And if he proposes publicly, I will tackle him.”

I laughed.

“That may actually be useful.”

“I’ve grown.”

She hung up.

Two weeks later, Marcy emailed both Adrian and me a blank checklist.

Subject: IF YOU TWO ARE GOING TO DO THIS AGAIN, DO IT CORRECTLY.

I called her.

“Eleanor?”

“Your father.”

I groaned.

“Everyone knows?”

“Apparently.”

“This is why people elope.”

Marcy paused.

“That is not legal advice.”

I laughed.

Then stared at the checklist.

Separate counsel.

Assets.

Liabilities.

Company interests.

Inheritance.

Estate planning.

No surprises.

The final line was handwritten by Marcy before scanning:

Truth before ceremony.

I printed it.

Placed it on the table.

And for the first time, the idea of marriage did not feel like a trap, test, rescue, merger, or performance.

It felt like a choice two informed people might eventually make.

That was when I knew the next question would not frighten me.

But I still needed Adrian to understand one last thing before he asked it.

If he ever became my future husband again, the title would mean nothing unless he could live with me as an equal before anyone called him one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Adrian Asked the Question Again Without a Ring, an Audience, or Any Promise
