guest list?”

Silence.

“I wondered when you’d find that.”

My stomach tightened.

“What was it for?”

“Adrian asked me to help identify people who might participate in the next round.”

“From my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you I approved?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“I didn’t.”

“I understand that now.”

“What did he say?”

“That you wanted the wedding weekend to help launch the next stage of Vale.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Did you believe him?”

“You had invested already.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Yes.”

He sounded ashamed.

“I believed him.”

“When was this supposed to happen?”

“Informal conversations during the wedding weekend.”

“Before or after I signed the marital agreement?”

“What agreement?”

He genuinely did not know.

“Never mind.”

“Mara, there’s something else.”

I stared at the wall.

“Go ahead.”

“Adrian planned an announcement.”

“What kind?”

“Strategic family-capital partnership.”

My mouth went dry.

“With whom?”

“He never formally named your father’s office.”

“But implied it.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“At the reception.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

The reception.

My wedding reception.

A room full of guests.

Cameras.

Investors.

My father.

An announcement vague enough to create expectation before anyone could object without publicly humiliating the bride and groom.

The architecture was obvious now.

The late marital agreement.

The investor guest list.

The financing deck.

The announcement.

Pressure created by timing.

Adrian had not merely hoped marriage would stabilize Vale.

He had built a financial event around the assumption that once I stood beside him in a wedding dress, neither I nor my father would be willing to contradict him publicly.

“Thank you, Graham.”

“Mara.”

“Yes?”

“I should have asked you directly.”

“Yes.”

I ended the call.

Noelle watched my face.

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at the calendar.

The wedding date was five weeks away.

For days, I had been treating cancellation as an emotional decision.

Now it was something else.

If the wedding remained technically alive, Adrian could continue pointing to it as evidence.

Evidence of stability.

Evidence of alignment.

Evidence of future capital.

I picked up my phone and called Elena.

She answered immediately.

“Mara?”

“Cancel it.”

Silence.

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

“The venue?”

“Yes.”

“Hotels?”

“Yes.”

“Vendors?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

I thought of the white peonies.

My grandmother’s flowers.

The argument that now seemed impossibly small.

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

I ended the call.

Then I removed the wedding date from my calendar.

For a few seconds, the empty square looked absurd.

Two years of love.

Eleven months of engagement.

Hundreds of plans.

Reduced to white space.

My phone buzzed.

Adrian.

I did not answer.

Another call.

Then another.

Finally a message.

WHAT DID YOU DO?

I looked at it.

A second appeared.

THE VENUE CALLED ME.

Then:

MARA, DO NOT CANCEL ANYTHING ELSE.

I almost laughed.

As though authority still belonged to him.

The final message arrived one minute later.

IF YOU CANCEL THIS WEDDING, YOU WILL DESTROY MORE THAN US.

I stared at those words.

For the first time, Adrian had said plainly what his behavior had implied all along.

The wedding was holding something else together.

And now that I had removed it, I was about to discover exactly how much of Vale Strategic Holdings had been built on the expectation that I would say yes.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Canceling the Wedding
