Nobody had lived there in years. Ivy had climbed over one window, and the porch boards bowed under my weight as I crossed them with a flashlight in one hand and my father’s brass key in the other.

Behind me, the estate remained bright against the ridge.

I could see figures moving at the distant windows.

My mother had not followed.

That worried me more than if she had.

The lock resisted twice before giving with a metallic crack. I pushed the door open and smelled dust, damp wood and the faint mineral scent of old stone. My father had called this place ordinary. He had been right. There was no security system, no climate control, no hidden safe behind a painting. Just a narrow kitchen, two small rooms and a pantry whose linoleum curled at the edges.

I found the loose board exactly where his letter said it would be.

Under the pantry floor.

Three screws had been replaced with flat brass ones instead of nails.

My hands shook as I loosened them.

Beneath the board sat a steel document case wrapped in heavy plastic.

I pulled it free.

The case was heavier than expected.

Inside were files.

Dozens.

Each tab carried a year, then initials.

Some contained medical paperwork.
