Authority page underneath if possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStacked documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne benign-looking signature positioned to facilitate another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether it would have worked, whether the documents could have survived scrutiny, almost did not matter.<\/p>\n<p>They intended to try.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia asked, \u201cAnd if she reads everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you picked the wrong morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 7:15 the next morning, she pocket-dialed me.<\/p>\n<p>For nineteen minutes I heard the rehearsal.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe luck.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe carelessness.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the first crack in a machine that depended on me remaining the only person who did not know the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron stopped playback.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Morris said, \u201cThere is one final segment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Timestamp: Saturday, 10:52 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after Daniel apparently received audio from my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>His voice.<\/p>\n<p>Not speaking to Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>A woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cReed is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Dorothy know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t stop with the account open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dorothy account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My false checking account.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa said, \u201cClose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot until funds clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat funds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second brokerage pull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat second pull?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Morris was already writing.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron continued the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa said, \u201cYou said there was only eight-five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pending. Once it lands, we shut everything down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas immediately pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaturday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called my brokerage.<\/p>\n<p>The conference room became silent while he navigated security questions with me.<\/p>\n<p>Name.<\/p>\n<p>Account.<\/p>\n<p>Verification.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached a fraud representative.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas identified himself with my permission.<\/p>\n<p>I explained the unauthorized eight-thousand-five-hundred-dollar transfer.<\/p>\n<p>The representative checked.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMrs. Harper, there is another transaction request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-four thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it go through?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause while she checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was flagged for additional verification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur system attempted to contact the primary number on file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My number.<\/p>\n<p>Not Alicia\u2019s secondary number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c10:49 a.m.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three minutes before Daniel\u2019s recovered conversation with Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>My phone had been on silent during the kitchen confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered seeing a missed call later from an unfamiliar number and ignoring it.<\/p>\n<p>That ignored call may have saved twenty-four thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The representative froze the brokerage account immediately.<\/p>\n<p>New credentials.<\/p>\n<p>New verbal authorization.<\/p>\n<p>No transfers without in-person confirmation until the fraud investigation concluded.<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been waiting for twenty-four thousand dollars while Alicia sat at my table trying to move me into Silver Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>The house was not the only money in play.<\/p>\n<p>Everything had been timed together.<\/p>\n<p>The bank account.<\/p>\n<p>The brokerage.<\/p>\n<p>The capacity narrative.<\/p>\n<p>The petition.<\/p>\n<p>The cash buyer.<\/p>\n<p>One weekend.<\/p>\n<p>One coordinated push.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Morris stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have evidence of an attempted second transfer contemporaneous with the recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd discussion of manufacturing a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe move faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She left the room to make calls.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron began packing his equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had not looked at her for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she whispered, \u201cDorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about the second transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>It changed almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer mattered more.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas closed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Morris returned.<\/p>\n<p>She had her coat on.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression was different.<\/p>\n<p>Focused.<\/p>\n<p>Urgent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers located Melissa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout ninety miles away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she surrender?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly. She contacted an attorney this morning. The attorney contacted us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t discussed any deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she wants to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Daniel\u2019s voice on the recording.<\/p>\n<p>You already have a part.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Talley.<\/p>\n<p>Wilkins.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had run because the files could implicate her.<\/p>\n<p>Now perhaps she had decided Daniel frightened her more than the truth did.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Morris headed toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa says she knows where Rourke keeps the originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage unit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says the storage unit is only copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginals of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProperty documents. Identity records. Financial files. Agreements.
