either.”

She placed another image beside it.

This one showed Daniel standing outside a building.

The sign behind him read CROSS STRATEGIC VENTURES.

Mark leaned closer.

“So the company is real.”

Detective Morris shook her head.

“The sign is real.”

He looked at her.

“The office was rented for three months under another name.”

“Whose?”

“Not Daniel Cross.”

My stomach tightened.

“What is his real name?”

“We’re working on that.”

Then she placed a third photograph on the table.

It showed Daniel with an older man outside a house.

I did not recognize either the man or the property.

On the back someone had written:

WILKINS — resistance issue.

George Wilkins.

The man whose conservatorship attempt had failed.

Detective Morris looked at me.

“George agreed to speak with us.”

“What did he say?”

Her expression changed.

“He said a woman from Silver Meadows told his niece he was becoming confused.”

“Was he?”

“He says no.”

“And the doctor?”

“He never went.”

“Why?”

“His brother intervened.”

I thought of Thomas stepping through my living-room doorway just as Alicia opened her folder.

One person.

One interruption.

Sometimes that was all it took.

Detective Morris continued.

“George also remembers a man coming to evaluate his house.”

“Bruce?”

She nodded.

“And Daniel?”

“He recognizes the photograph.”

Alicia whispered, “How?”

“Daniel presented himself as a financial adviser who could help George protect his assets before entering care.”

The same machine.

Different door.

I looked at the five names Detective Morris had written.

“How many succeeded?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“How many tried?”

“We don’t know.”

“How long has this been happening?”

“We don’t know.”

Three honest answers.

Each worse than a guess.

Then Detective Morris’s phone vibrated.

She read the message.

Her eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Patrol located Melissa’s car.”

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

Alicia stood.

“Did she leave?”

“They’re checking.”

Another message arrived.

Detective Morris read it.

Then looked at us.

“Melissa did not board a flight.”

“Then where is she?”

“We don’t know.”

She gathered the photographs.

At the door, she stopped.

“There’s one more thing.”

I waited.

“The storage unit was rented eleven months ago.”

Long before Alicia lost the college money.

Long before anyone needed my house to repair her mistake.

My case had begun through Alicia.

The operation had not.

After the detective left, I stood at the dining-room window and watched bare branches move against the gray sky.

For two days I had wondered why people had chosen me.

Now I understood the more frightening possibility.

They had not chosen Dorothy Harper because I was uniquely vulnerable.

They had built a system for people who looked like me.

Widowed.

Homeowner.

Older.

Living alone.

Family nearby.

Enough assets to matter.

Enough ordinary forgetfulness to distort.

And somewhere, perhaps before my daughter-in-law ever lost a dollar, someone had already learned how easily concern could be turned into evidence.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Woman Who Escaped Their First Conservatorship Attempt Showed Me Exactly
