His voice was low now, stripped of the pleading tone he had used all morning. \u201cYou don\u2019t leave until you tell us what you did with Mom\u2019s information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do anything with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked me for her doctor, insurance and medications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Silver Meadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cSilver Meadows does not diagnose progressive cognitive impairment from an insurance card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making everything sound sinister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m describing what is on the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark scrolled through his messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember you texting me about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He kept scrolling.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks of messages.<\/p>\n<p>Then four.<\/p>\n<p>His thumb stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen toward Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>Got the doctor paperwork handled. Silver Meadows shouldn\u2019t give us trouble now.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did \u2018doctor paperwork handled\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re twisting words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the intake summary again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you contact my physician?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia, did you ever speak to Dorothy\u2019s doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment something settled inside me.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, part of me had still treated the morning like a puzzle that might eventually reveal one enormous misunderstanding. Perhaps Alicia was overbearing. Perhaps Mark was weak. Perhaps Bruce had been too eager. Perhaps several foolish decisions had collided into something ugly.<\/p>\n<p>But there was no innocent path from never contacting my doctor to telling a facility that I suffered progressive memory impairment.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gathered the Silver Meadows papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter this meeting, Dorothy and I will contact the facility directly. We will also document every representation made about her health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia laughed sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou act as if I committed a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not accused you of one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re implying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m establishing facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Bruce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She froze.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Bruce needed Mom\u2019s information when he was preparing the market estimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t need her medication list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr her insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr her doctor\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you ask me for all of it at the same time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia grabbed her purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>I did not stop her.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped but did not turn.<\/p>\n<p>He had picked up the valuation again.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom of the last page was a line none of us had noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Target listing date: December 27.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas pointed to another line.<\/p>\n<p>Seller representative: Mark Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came back to the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never agreed to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never authorized Bruce to list Dorothy\u2019s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign an agency agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you instruct him to name you as seller representative?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia remained by the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her telephone rang.<\/p>\n<p>The screen faced Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He saw the name.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia silenced the call.<\/p>\n<p>It rang again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark crossed the room and touched the speaker icon before she could pull the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Keller\u2019s voice filled my hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia? Where are you? I\u2019ve been calling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to know what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bruce lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dorothy situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the room became still.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat situation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Dorothy there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning, Bruce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then a careful voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand you\u2019ve been taking photographs of my bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd apparently preparing to sell my house December twenty-seventh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s been a misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s mouth moved slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Not quite a smile.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cDid I hire you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ask for a valuation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I give you permission to enter my house while I was elsewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia said the family had authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark slammed a palm against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat authorization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, I am not getting pulled into family disagreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is on your paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped closer to the phone and identified himself.<\/p>\n<p>That changed Bruce\u2019s voice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He became formal.<\/p>\n<p>Measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should probably speak to my broker before saying more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be sensible,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bruce said, \u201cFor the record, I didn\u2019t prepare the signature document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s pen stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat signature document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one Alicia emailed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark slowly turned toward his wife.<\/p>\n<p>I watched every bit of color disappear from Alicia\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d Thomas asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober ninth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after I had supposedly signed it locally.<\/p>\n<p>While I was still in Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say it was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Dorothy had authorized Mark to manage the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that,\u201d Alicia snapped.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce answered instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, we had paper.<\/p>\n<p>Now we had a trail.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas told Bruce not to delete anything\u2014emails, messages, photographs, attachments, drafts or property records involving me.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he added something that changed the room again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should ask Alicia about December eighteenth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lunged toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Mark pulled it away.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked, \u201cWhat happens December eighteenth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilver Meadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia told me Dorothy was scheduled to move in then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>December eighteenth.<\/p>\n<p>A week before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered, \u201cYou told me after Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Mom would spend Christmas with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the valuation.<\/p>\n<p>Listing date: December twenty-seventh.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the calendar became brutally clear.<\/p>\n<p>Move me out December eighteenth.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas without my home.<\/p>\n<p>List it December twenty-seventh.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce remained on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked, \u201cWas the Silver Meadows placement permanent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She finally sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to be thirty days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA trial?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout asking me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas opened the Silver Meadows documents again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Dorothy entered December eighteenth, thirty days ends in mid-January.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia nodded faintly.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the property valuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my house could already be listed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean it would sell immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that truly your explanation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question no one had yet asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my house sold before thirty days ended and I wanted to come home, where was I supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered something under his breath and walked away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia snapped, \u201cWe would have figured it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned on her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Mom had agreed to downsize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needs to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence returned.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked Alicia, \u201cWhere were the proceeds from Dorothy\u2019s house supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed so quickly that I saw the answer before he found it.<\/p>\n<p>She reached for the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas moved it away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we are finished with you controlling these documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey belong to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey concern Dorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, do you and Alicia have a joint bank account ending in 4418?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Dorothy an owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that account connected to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom of a financial instruction sheet was a bank name and an account number ending in those four digits.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it:<\/p>\n<p>Designated proceeds account.<\/p>\n<p>Mark leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas chose his words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears somebody expected proceeds from a transaction involving Dorothy\u2019s property to be directed into your joint account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son looked at Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>She did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you do this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Then finally at her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom losing everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did we lose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe college money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twins\u2019 college fund?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-three thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He physically stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had eighty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lost seventy-three thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invested it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia began crying for real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce introduced me to somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even Bruce, still faintly audible on the telephone, went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas wrote another name when Alicia finally gave it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked how much she had given him.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty thousand first.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty thousand later.<\/p>\n<p>Then twenty-three.<\/p>\n<p>All but a small remainder of the twins\u2019 savings.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia had apparently been trying to replace the money before Mark discovered it was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly her desperation about my house made terrible sense.<\/p>\n<p>Not complete sense.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>Mark sank into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned to replace their money with Mom\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI planned to fix everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother\u2019s house is not your emergency fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched my son and felt grief arrive in an unexpected form.<\/p>\n<p>He had been deceived.<\/p>\n<p>He had also helped deceive me.<\/p>\n<p>Both things could be true.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas ended the call with Bruce after confirming again that every record would be preserved.<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned to Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel Cross have anything to do with Dorothy\u2019s documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked for Mom\u2019s medical information around the same time you started talking to Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stood again.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She headed toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat appointment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She froze.<\/p>\n<p>He had found something else on her calendar sync.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow. Ten o\u2019clock. Dr. Leonard Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked trapped.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cA specialist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Dorothy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no appointment tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas picked up the Silver Meadows intake summary.<\/p>\n<p>The false description of my declining memory.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Dr. Price evaluating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came so quietly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not understand the word in that context.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did.<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapacity to make her own decisions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>At the forged-looking signature.<\/p>\n<p>The photographs taken inside my house.<\/p>\n<p>The missing spare key.<\/p>\n<p>The retirement placement arranged before anyone asked me.<\/p>\n<p>The document directing my money toward my son\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>The medical claims written by people who had never examined me.<\/p>\n<p>And now an appointment I had never made to determine whether I was competent to manage my own life.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:15 that morning, I thought I had accidentally overheard my daughter-in-law planning to sell my house.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, I understood the house might have been only one piece of it.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was building a record.<\/p>\n<p>A story.<\/p>\n<p>A version of Dorothy Harper who forgot things, could not manage money, needed supervised housing and should let other people sign for her.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the grocery notepad I had hidden beneath the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark did too.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>I still did not tell them exactly what was written there.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I closed the pad and placed my hand over it.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow morning, somebody expected to evaluate whether I was capable of making my own decisions.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know who arranged it, what they were told, and what papers they expect me to bring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to follow the trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my son.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the woman he had married.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf somebody has been building a case that I can\u2019t make decisions for myself, I want to see every piece of it before they learn I\u2019ve started building mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11402\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Doctor Expected a Confused Widow, but Someone Had Already Given Him a Detailed Story About Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark pulled out his phone so quickly he nearly knocked over his tea.
