Alicia remained standing for several seconds, one hand resting on the open leather folder. Her smile returned, but it had lost its ease. \u201cOf course,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s nice Dorothy has somebody looking out for her.\u201d Thomas glanced at me. \u201cDorothy has been looking out for herself for seventy-three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark lowered himself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody touched the banana bread.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia recovered first. She always had an instinct for changing the subject before anyone could examine it too closely. \u201cThere\u2019s really nothing dramatic here. Mark and I have just been discussing some options for Mother D.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy future,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She patted my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Your future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved my hand away to reach for the teapot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, living alone has risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked around my kitchen. \u201cWhich risks specifically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are three steps to the back porch,\u201d he said. \u201cDorothy\u2019s bedroom, bathroom and kitchen are all on this floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only stairs. There\u2019s maintenance. Emergencies. Isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor lives next door,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Frank across the street,\u201d Thomas added. \u201cHis daughter is a paramedic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia glanced sharply at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t really the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you could tell Dorothy what the point is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark cleared his throat. \u201cWe found a place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I already knew its name.<\/p>\n<p>I made myself ask anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilver Meadows,\u201d Alicia said quickly. \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful. Gardens, transportation, meals, activities. You wouldn\u2019t have to worry about anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not worried now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, but we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence sounded almost kind if you ignored the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked what Silver Meadows cost.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround sixty-four hundred a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I poured tea into four cups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho pays that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia tapped one fingernail against the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s part of what these documents help organize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas extended his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I see them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re preliminary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent. Preliminary papers are easier to fix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered, \u201cAlicia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive him the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anger that crossed her face lasted barely a second, but I saw it. So did Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Then she slid the folder across the table.<\/p>\n<p>He began reading.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched Thomas review legal documents before. He did not skim. He did not react dramatically. He read the way some men inspect machinery\u2014slowly, assuming the dangerous part will reveal itself if given enough attention.<\/p>\n<p>Page one.<\/p>\n<p>Page two.<\/p>\n<p>Page three.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He went back.<\/p>\n<p>Read again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia leaned forward. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas removed one sheet and placed it separately on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>Mark shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas tapped the first sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not paperwork for Silver Meadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia laughed too quickly. \u201cI never said every page was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cYou didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the document toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy, have you seen this before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put on my reading glasses.<\/p>\n<p>There were paragraphs full of terms I did not immediately understand. Halfway down the page, my name appeared in bold type.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Elaine Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath it was Mark\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pointed to one paragraph. \u201cThis grants Mark broad authority over several financial matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that was emergency paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One quiet word.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s cheeks reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s standard planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one concerns authority over Dorothy\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProperty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is taking anything,\u201d Alicia interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas held up one finger without looking at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like Mark to finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>My son finally looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought these were papers in case something happened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when love becomes inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>After the nineteen-minute call, after hearing him agree to perform concern, after hearing them discuss Silver Meadows and selling my home, a part of me still wanted him to be telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that part of myself.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued through the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not much.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy, have you signed anything for Mark or Alicia recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything at all that might relate to your property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He slowly turned a page toward me.<\/p>\n<p>My signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>The first letter curled exactly the way mine did. The long stroke through the H leaned slightly right. Even the little upward hook at the end was there, a habit I had developed when I was twenty-five and never managed to lose.<\/p>\n<p>It was my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Except I had never written it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I removed my glasses and cleaned them even though they were not dirty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did this come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia answered before anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the glasses back on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat day?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were several Tuesdays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember the exact date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He tapped the printed date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober eighth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>I did not need a calendar.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Mark.<\/p>\n<p>My sister Ruth had undergone hip surgery in Charleston on October seventh. I had driven there the previous evening and stayed six days. Mark had called me twice while I was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was I October eighth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia frowned. \u201cHow would he remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered, \u201cCharleston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Ruth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas studied the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis states Dorothy signed it locally on October eighth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Alicia made the first mistake she could not take back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce handled that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas raised his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She realized what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Bruce handle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas waited.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He looked back.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed between them.<\/p>\n<p>Not affection.<\/p>\n<p>Coordination.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen Raymond and Mark exchange the same look when Mark broke the garage window at fourteen. Back then, the lie involved a baseball and a neighbor boy. This time, the object between them was a paper bearing my name.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Mark said, \u201cBruce gave us some documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose planning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas wrote BRUCE across the top of his yellow legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cDorothy should sign absolutely nothing today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s composure slipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe drove all the way over here for nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence afterward was exquisite.<\/p>\n<p>I tilted my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were in the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas lowered his eyes toward his notes, and I suspected he was hiding a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Mark rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia, let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to settle this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Settle.<\/p>\n<p>That word pulled another line from the morning back into my mind.<\/p>\n<p>Once she\u2019s settled at Silver Meadows, Bruce can move fast on the house.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my expression mild.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat needs settling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked around my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cannot continue forever, Dorothy. You\u2019re alone in a house that is too big. Mark worries about you. The twins are starting college. We have our own expenses. Everyone has to plan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She knew instantly that she had gone too far.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas returned to the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking of planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out a glossy sheet I had not noticed beneath the legal papers.<\/p>\n<p>It was not from Silver Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>Across the top was my address.<\/p>\n<p>Below it were photographs.<\/p>\n<p>My front porch.<\/p>\n<p>My driveway.<\/p>\n<p>The backyard.<\/p>\n<p>The living room.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Then my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at that image for several seconds before the meaning reached me.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had stood inside my bedroom and taken a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a name.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Keller.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it, a proposed listing price: $184,900.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the photographs as if seeing them for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stopped looking at me.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the image of my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Keller had visited my house twice.<\/p>\n<p>The first time Alicia introduced him as a friend who loved older houses.<\/p>\n<p>The second time she claimed he wanted to see our original crown molding before renovating his own home.<\/p>\n<p>I had made coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I had shown him Raymond\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<p>I had even apologized because the upstairs bathroom needed repainting.<\/p>\n<p>During the second visit, Alicia had asked whether I had more flour in the pantry while Bruce remained in the living room.<\/p>\n<p>I had been away perhaps three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Three minutes was apparently enough to begin selling a person\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>I removed my glasses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019d like to know how long my house has been for sale without me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered, \u201cMom, I didn\u2019t know about the photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed that he was shocked.<\/p>\n<p>That did not make him innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had already heard his voice before sunrise agreeing that the house would be sold after I was \u201csettled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pointed toward the valuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce Keller prepared this using information obtained from inside Dorothy\u2019s home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned to his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Mom knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s head snapped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he kept staring at the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she agreed to let Bruce value the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she knew he was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You said she agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey mean basically the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered before Mark could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. They do not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that morning, fear appeared on my son\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Not embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Because he had finally understood what I had begun understanding at 7:15.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Alicia had told him, there were parts of this plan he did not know.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble was that I had no idea yet how many.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11400\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Photograph of My Living Room Exposed the Visit Nobody Admitted Happened and the Key That Should Never Have Left<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas sat beside me and folded his hands on the table.
