Pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d use your own son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Angela?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis\u2019s answer came softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe isn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian pulled his hand away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>Not from me.<\/p>\n<p>From everything.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel confronted him about the shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>Bribes.<\/p>\n<p>Land purchases.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis became angry.<\/p>\n<p>A struggle.<\/p>\n<p>A blow.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel fell.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later, Patricia arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly as she had confessed.<\/p>\n<p>But the recording captured something she never mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>She saw Samuel moving.<\/p>\n<p>She asked Dennis what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis said Samuel attacked him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia asked, \u201cKnows what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis told her to help.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd explain the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel groaned.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Patricia said words that mattered more than anything she later claimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do this, you owe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not coercion.<\/p>\n<p>A bargain.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I help you, you do what I ask when the time comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she ask?\u201d Brian whispered.<\/p>\n<p>We already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Years later.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Access.<\/p>\n<p>Help at Mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Help with me.<\/p>\n<p>Their entire alliance began beside Samuel\u2019s injured body.<\/p>\n<p>A favor exchanged for future obedience.<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had carried the evidence of his own corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Against Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Against Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Against anyone rewriting history without him.<\/p>\n<p>He had become trapped by the same instinct that trapped June into documenting him.<\/p>\n<p>Keep records.<\/p>\n<p>Keep leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Keep proof.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes called minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough to hold both of them on substantially more serious charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to say yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis was caught.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia was locked up.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had confessed.<\/p>\n<p>The money had been traced.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was alive.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger existed.<\/p>\n<p>June\u2019s clues had been found.<\/p>\n<p>But Daniel was staring at his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen toward us.<\/p>\n<p>A development company had filed an emergency petition that morning claiming contractual rights to June\u2019s Morrow County property.<\/p>\n<p>Filed before Dennis went to the motel.<\/p>\n<p>The claimant was not Daniel Hart.<\/p>\n<p>Not Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Not one of Dennis\u2019s old shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>It was a company called Price-Miller Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The listed manager:<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian looked equally stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel is in a nursing home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who filed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened the attached contract.<\/p>\n<p>The signature at the bottom was dated twenty years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>June Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Beside hers:<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price.<\/p>\n<p>And the document appeared to sell development rights to the land long before Dennis ever tried to take it.<\/p>\n<p>If it was real, then June had not simply refused Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>She and Samuel had made a plan of their own.<\/p>\n<p>And every assumption we had about what my grandmother intended for that land was about to change.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11373\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Contract Bearing June\u2019s Signature Looked Like a Betrayal Until Samuel Remembered the Promise She Had Hidden Inside It<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain began shortly after dark.
