Underground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>The geological survey.<\/p>\n<p>The freshly dug hole.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had been using the property.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia said Dennis discovered an abandoned service chamber from an old quarry exploration project near the northern boundary.<\/p>\n<p>He stored documents there years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he photograph himself digging?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted Angela to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked toward the observation glass again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the original ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>June had copies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel kept the original?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis never found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks June buried it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained the hole.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had searched the land because he believed June hid Samuel\u2019s original records there.<\/p>\n<p>But June\u2019s letter referred only to copies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes the original contain something the copies don\u2019t?\u201d Brian asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The copied pages had initials.<\/p>\n<p>The original ledger apparently identified everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Officials.<\/p>\n<p>Investors.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>People who had helped Dennis acquire land.<\/p>\n<p>Some were still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Some remained influential.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had spent decades fearing that ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered beside me, \u201cThat may be why Samuel died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Brian asked, \u201cDoes Dad think Angela has it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he won\u2019t believe her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first thing she said that frightened me more than Dennis\u2019s threats.<\/p>\n<p>Brian understood too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll make her prove she doesn\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not commanding.<\/p>\n<p>Pleading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis never loved anyone more than himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian looked at her for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat includes you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked out.<\/p>\n<p>I met him in the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped when he saw me.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had heard it before.<\/p>\n<p>This time he added nothing.<\/p>\n<p>No request for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation.<\/p>\n<p>No defense.<\/p>\n<p>Just the apology.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes emerged minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re searching the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming,\u201d Brian said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost argued.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a small thing.<\/p>\n<p>But I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, tactical officers entered June\u2019s land from two directions.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis was not in the underground chamber.<\/p>\n<p>They found supplies.<\/p>\n<p>A cot.<\/p>\n<p>Water.<\/p>\n<p>Food.<\/p>\n<p>A radio.<\/p>\n<p>A rifle.<\/p>\n<p>Maps.<\/p>\n<p>And a wall covered with photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Most were of me.<\/p>\n<p>One was different.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Samuel Price.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>The date printed on the photograph was seven years after he supposedly disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes brought us the image.<\/p>\n<p>Brian stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Dad didn\u2019t kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at Millstone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the back of the photograph, Dennis had written an address.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched it.<\/p>\n<p>A nursing facility in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes called.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody named Samuel Price had ever been a resident.<\/p>\n<p>Then she tried the alias written beneath the address.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>The administrator checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d she said. \u201cMr. Pierce lives here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you describe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-four. Significant mobility limitations. Some speech impairment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas he been there long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho pays for his care?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administrator checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More keyboard sounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHart Family Services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Hart.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>Brian covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>His father had not killed Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>He had done something stranger.<\/p>\n<p>He had hidden him alive for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we speak to him?\u201d Reyes asked.<\/p>\n<p>The administrator hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has cognitive limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraumatic brain injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The injury Patricia saw at the pump house.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had erased him anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Then the administrator said something that made Reyes straighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, Mr. Pierce has been asking about someone recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat woman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps repeating a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes relayed the question.<\/p>\n<p>The administrator listened to someone nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngela.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price had disappeared before I ever met Brian.<\/p>\n<p>He had been hidden under another name for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Yet somehow, in a nursing facility hundreds of miles away, the man Dennis had spent years silencing knew exactly who I was.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11367\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Samuel Price Had Been Hidden Alive for Years, and the One Name He Remembered Turned Dennis\u2019s Entire Plan Inside Out<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Patricia looked smaller without her pearls.
