stared at me.

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Then I remembered the old boxes in my garage.

The ones from my mother’s storage unit.

The ones that included my grandmother’s papers.

Dennis had files.

Patricia had copies.

But neither of them had everything.

Otherwise they would not still be digging on June’s land.

I stood.

“My grandmother kept records.”

Daniel understood immediately.

“Where?”

“At my house.”

Brian went pale.

“The house that’s been empty since you left.”

“Yes.”

Reyes was already reaching for her phone.

Nobody needed to explain the danger.

If Dennis knew June kept something important—

And if he had watched me for years—

He might know exactly where her papers ended up.

Police reached my house twelve minutes later.

The back door was open.

A window had been broken.

My garage had been emptied across the floor.

Boxes torn apart.

Photographs scattered.

Old tax papers ripped open.

Furniture moved.

The cedar jewelry box lay broken upstairs.

Dennis had searched everything.

But one thing was untouched.

A rusted metal filing box I had moved months earlier into the hospital’s records closet after cleaning out the garage.

I had forgotten about it until that moment.

Inside were papers belonging to June.

Including an envelope I had never opened.

The front was written in my grandmother’s handwriting.

For Angela only.

If Dennis Brooks ever comes back, give this to the police.

<a
