Are you confident the woman you identified is the same person who came to your bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth adjusted herself in the witness chair and gave him an irritated look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may be seventy-two, Mr. Mercer, but there\u2019s nothing wrong with my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few people almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody at our table did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times did you see her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder what circumstances?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came to the teller counter. She presented identification. She made withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything distinctive about her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth glanced at the blonde woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer perfume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong. Floral. Gardenia, maybe. Please remain seated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bailiff moved closer to the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s face had gone strangely flat.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen her irritated, offended, smug, wounded and angry.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen her afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel returned to Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the customer wore an emerald ring. Did you notice anything unusual about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe played with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurned it around on her finger while she waited for me to count the cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She demonstrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inside had writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not look at me this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat writing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t read all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She narrowed her eyes, remembering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I saw the first letter when she turned it. The stone was modest because they were broke. The inscription mattered more than the size.<\/p>\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Brian looked from me to his mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>The judge noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I,\u201d I thought.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked permission to question the blonde woman.<\/p>\n<p>The judge allowed limited questions.<\/p>\n<p>She approached reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>Up close, she appeared younger than I had guessed, perhaps thirty-five. Her blonde curls were carefully arranged. Pearl studs sat at her ears. She carried a leather handbag clutched tightly against her side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour name?\u201d the judge asked.<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched the name in my memory.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cMs. Grant, do you know Angela Brooks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth made a disbelieving license?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you ever entered First Federal Bank representing yourself as Angela Brooks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answers came faster now.<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia appeared to relax slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brian spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His attorney whispered urgently for him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Brian didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Melissa with genuine bewilderment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen you before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s eyes flashed toward the judge as though hoping someone would rescue her from the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody did.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked the next question gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Brooks, how long have you known Melissa Grant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s attorney was not present because Patricia had entered the courtroom merely as a supporting family member, not as a party.<\/p>\n<p>That position now looked dangerously temporary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer entire life,\u201d Patricia answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd has your son met her before today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a family matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew she was here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she might attend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was concerned about Brian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped me with a glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would a niece your son has never met be concerned enough about his divorce to attend a hearing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s breathing grew shallow.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Wilkes watched them with the grim patience of someone waiting for younger people to finish telling unnecessary lies.<\/p>\n<p>Then she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s wearing the same perfume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she still has that purse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa instinctively pulled the leather bag closer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the judge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge considered for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Grant, do you consent to allowing the bailiff to inspect the contents of your purse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia said, \u201cShe doesn\u2019t have to agree to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge\u2019s stare silenced her.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked toward Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>That was her mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward Brian.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Toward Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bailiff brought the purse to the evidence table.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa removed each item herself.<\/p>\n<p>Wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Keys.<\/p>\n<p>Lipstick.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>A small silver compact.<\/p>\n<p>Tissues.<\/p>\n<p>Medication.<\/p>\n<p>A phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then her fingers touched something at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen take it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, she withdrew a small dark velvet pouch.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that pouch.<\/p>\n<p>I had kept my grandmother\u2019s ring inside it whenever I traveled.<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Brian whispered my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngela.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa placed the pouch on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>The judge nodded to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The emerald caught the fluorescent courtroom light.<\/p>\n<p>For six months I had not cried in front of Brian.<\/p>\n<p>I had not cried when he filed for divorce.<\/p>\n<p>I had not cried when people repeated Patricia\u2019s rumors.<\/p>\n<p>I had not cried when attorneys questioned how I handled my own salary.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the ring broke something open.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed both hands over my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned the ring carefully between his fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngela, can you identify it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I approached.<\/p>\n<p>Even before I held it, I knew.<\/p>\n<p>The worn band.<\/p>\n<p>The small emerald.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny nick near the setting where I had once struck it against a hospital locker.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the band, faded but legible, was the engraving.<\/p>\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice hardly sounded like me.<\/p>\n<p>Brian stood behind his table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa, where did you get ring?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Brian Brooks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who gave it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Patricia again.<\/p>\n<p>Brian followed her gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Something changed in his face.<\/p>\n<p>For months he had looked at me with suspicion. Now, for the first time, some of that suspicion had somewhere else to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother gave it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Brian stepped away from his attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid my mother give you Angela\u2019s ring?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Brooks,\u201d the judge warned.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel placed the ring carefully back on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then he produced enlarged images of the four withdrawal slips beside samples of my genuine signature.<\/p>\n<p>He explained the lifted pen.<\/p>\n<p>The copied shapes.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between imitation and natural movement.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia stared straight ahead.<\/p>\n<p>When Daniel finished, Brian rose without being asked.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer tried to stop him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to say something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrian, sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge looked irritated. \u201cMr. Brooks, this is not an open discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I have spent six months accusing my wife of stealing that money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word wife landed strangely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need this on the record. I never saw those withdrawal slips before this case started.
