Reagan moved without hesitation. She knew every turn.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me almost as much as Carter behind us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you known this was here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had sixteen years to prepare an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shot cracked behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Brick fragments scattered across my back.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped asking.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan reached a rusted ladder and climbed. I followed. At the top she pushed against a steel hatch concealed beneath brush.<\/p>\n<p>Cold predawn air rushed in.<\/p>\n<p>We emerged beyond the western retaining wall, farther from the house than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Another shot sounded near the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>I started toward it.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan caught my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter wants you to do exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo is Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Camden is hurt, running toward the gunman without knowing where he is won\u2019t help him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t tell me how to protect him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That single word stopped me longer than an argument would have.<\/p>\n<p>We moved downhill through the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Vale appeared behind a fallen cedar with blood running along one side of his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Camden?\u201d Reagan asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vale pointed toward the boathouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe drew Carter\u2019s man away from the drain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter\u2019s man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bullet struck the tree above us.<\/p>\n<p>Vale returned fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We crouched.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLedger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched my jacket.<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Vale said, \u201cGet it away from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley, this is not the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exactly the time. Everybody spent three years deciding what happened to me because supposedly there wasn\u2019t time to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shot struck the ground nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine,\u201d Vale said. \u201cThen decide quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the lake.<\/p>\n<p>A light moved behind the boathouse.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad\u2019s voice came through the old phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth side of the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen move north.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued, \u201cCarter has the road covered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going through the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. There\u2019s another vehicle on Mercer Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale asked.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere I would take Finnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you taking me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother\u2019s place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man from Oakwood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Mom arranged for him to protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does a dead woman arrange a prison assignment thirteen years later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t arrange the assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what did she arrange?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do genealogy somewhere people aren\u2019t shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan pointed east.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a storm culvert under the county road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad heard through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you do,\u201d I muttered.<\/p>\n<p>We moved.<\/p>\n<p>Vale remained behind long enough to fire twice toward the house, then followed.<\/p>\n<p>The culvert carried us beneath the road into woods belonging to an abandoned summer camp.<\/p>\n<p>Dad joined us ten minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Mud covered his clothes. Blood stained one sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you weren\u2019t hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose blood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of Carter\u2019s men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Dad noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was going to be my second question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, Dad almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan stood twenty feet away.<\/p>\n<p>He saw her.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever relief had entered his face disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He crossed the distance between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen him look so completely unprepared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were her friend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan lowered her pistol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the law firm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKestrel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word seemed to age him.<\/p>\n<p>Vale watched silently.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire recruited me because my accounting background was stronger than hers. She needed someone who could trace transfers without using Dennis Industrial\u2019s systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou married me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she asked me to keep watching the network if she couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped back as though she had struck him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou married me because my dead wife told you to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire knew she was running out of time. She believed Kestrel would survive her. She also believed you would keep trying to contain it privately because you were terrified of losing Dennis Industrial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right,\u201d Reagan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked me to remain close enough to know if the network became active again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t plan to marry you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>There was no humor in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met you at the foundation fundraiser because Claire\u2019s attorney told me Carter had begun requesting archived financial records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was twelve years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou introduced yourself like we were strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew everything about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew what Claire had written.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you love me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked away.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not marry you because Claire told me to. I met you because of Claire. Those are different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from where I\u2019m standing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou poisoned me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drugged you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told the dose would keep you unconscious for six hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed the pharmacist he used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan named a man I didn\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Vale did.<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe worked narcotics evidence for the county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil five years ago,\u201d Reagan said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy drug me at all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter told me he knew you were collecting evidence. He said if I didn\u2019t help search the study, he would expose Finnley\u2019s prison location to people connected to the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe already knew where I was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot your unit. Your work assignment. Your routines. The protections Vale had arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had been trying to penetrate the shield around me.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought six hours unconscious was better than letting Carter reach Finnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the awful recognition in his face.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan had made the same kind of choice he had.<\/p>\n<p>Harm one person to prevent a worse harm to another.<\/p>\n<p>Our family apparently considered that love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still helped him,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I crashed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Howard.<\/p>\n<p>Vale nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan called me before emergency dispatch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved me to the clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd staged my death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part came later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said, \u201cCarter believed you were dying. Vale realized letting him believe it gave us an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo everyone planned my death except me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded my arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you know how prison felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Point made.<\/p>\n<p>We reached the abandoned camp\u2019s dining hall as dawn began whitening the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Vale locked the doors.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan checked the rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat at a table.<\/p>\n<p>I removed the ledger from my jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one touches this until I read Mom\u2019s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan did too.<\/p>\n<p>Vale turned away, giving me privacy without being asked.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The paper inside had yellowed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Finnley\u2014<\/p>\n<p>If this reaches you, then the adults around you have probably failed to solve a problem we should never have allowed to become yours.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s voice lived in the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Not literally.<\/p>\n<p>In the structure.<\/p>\n<p>She had always hated adults who treated children as extensions of their mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Kestrel began as something useful and became dangerous because people discovered that secrecy could be sold. Your father will tell himself he can repair it. Howard will tell himself rules can be bent if the outcome is good. Reagan will tell herself loyalty requires silence.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at all three of them.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had described them perfectly sixteen years in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the line that hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Do not inherit our excuses.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed and continued.<\/p>\n<p>There is money in your name. It is not a gift. It was taken from transactions I believed were criminal, documented, and preserved as evidence. If lawful authorities determine it belongs elsewhere, return it. Do not let anyone persuade you that money becomes yours merely because you can keep it.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like her too.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was shorter.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger identifies the people who turned Kestrel into a marketplace. But the first page is incomplete by design. One authorized partner is omitted because I could not prove whether that person was protecting the system or controlling it. If you ever need to know who, find the original incorporation photograph. Finnley, trust evidence before people\u2014including me.<\/p>\n<p>Love,<br \/>\nMom<\/p>\n<p>I read the last line twice.<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked, \u201cWhat photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed him the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan leaned over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Vale remained apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original incorporation photograph,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said, \u201cYes, there was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire kept it in the old Dennis Industrial lobby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe replaced those photographs years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho handled the archives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all knew.<\/p>\n<p>Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Vale pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan checked hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the dining-hall window.<\/p>\n<p>A dark SUV rolled slowly onto the abandoned camp road.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had found us.<\/p>\n<p>Dad folded Mom\u2019s letter and handed it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale looked at Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>I understood first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the cover.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I ran my fingers along the binding.<\/p>\n<p>A tiny hard rectangle sat beneath the leather.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking device.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had not merely wanted us to find K-17.<\/p>\n<p>He had expected us to find the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>He had been following it.<\/p>\n<p>Vale reached for the book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tore the tracker from the binding.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Men spread through the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice came from somewhere beyond the dining hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve made this much harder than it needed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the tracker.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the old camp map beside the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>A service road ran west.<\/p>\n<p>I handed the tracker to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut this somewhere Carter will chase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad smiled grimly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis Industrial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s men approached the building.<\/p>\n<p>I put the ledger beneath my jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mom deliberately left one name off the first page, I want to know whose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale checked his pistol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if it\u2019s someone we know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad, Reagan, and Vale.<\/p>\n<p>At three people my mother had described in a letter written before any of us understood how badly their secrets would damage me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen this time,\u201d I said, \u201cwe stop protecting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11325\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Inside the Abandoned Dennis Industrial Archive, We Found My Mother\u2019s Missing Photograph\u2014and the Fourth Kestrel Partner Was Detective Howard Vale\u2019s Father<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThere it is.\u201d Carter\u2019s voice carried through the dust as if he had entered a conference room rather than broken through a wall with a gun in his hand.
