Vale stood between them with his hands in his pockets.<\/p>\n<p>Then the microphone came alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou leave Finnley out of this,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Carter answered too quietly for the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Dad slammed one palm onto the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale moved between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamden, this isn\u2019t about what you want anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll handle the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been saying that for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Carter walked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps looking. He already asked me about Harrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered, \u201cThen give him a believable explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It\u2019s everybody\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The picture distorted.<\/p>\n<p>Several seconds disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>When it returned, Carter stood closer to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when he finds Benton?\u201d Carter asked. \u201cWestford? The offshore transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those names were in the box beside my feet.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019ll stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I replayed that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad would stop me.<\/p>\n<p>The man I had spent three years imagining as helpless had known I was approaching something dangerous before my arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The recording jumped again.<\/p>\n<p>Vale spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned. \u201cChoose what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley takes the theft case, or Carter handles him another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Vale did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA burglary. Wrong place, wrong night. Something goes badly. Everybody mourns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad crossed the office so fast his body blurred.<\/p>\n<p>He seized Carter\u2019s shirt and slammed him against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you touch my son\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale pulled him away.<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hatred in Carter\u2019s face was not ordinary jealousy.<\/p>\n<p>It looked ancient.<\/p>\n<p>Vale waited until Dad released him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThree years. Possibly less. Financial theft. Nobody gets killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Three years.<\/p>\n<p>That was my sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Vale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re asking me to destroy my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m offering you the version where he survives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I sat motionless.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had asked why Dad failed to save me.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood that the question had been wrong.<\/p>\n<p>He had known what was coming.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had even agreed to it.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and paced because sitting suddenly felt impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Oakwood had taught me to control anger. Men who could provoke you could control you. I had learned to wait until rage cooled enough to become useful.<\/p>\n<p>So I looked for information.<\/p>\n<p>A folder had appeared on the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>FINNLEY.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were files organized by dates.<\/p>\n<p>ARREST.<\/p>\n<p>SENTENCING.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 4.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 11.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 18.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 24.<\/p>\n<p>I opened SENTENCING.<\/p>\n<p>Dad appeared alone in his office.<\/p>\n<p>He faced the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you ever see this, it means I failed to keep the past away from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people monitoring every route I could use. Calls. Letters. Visitors. If you learn too much while you\u2019re inside, you become more dangerous to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image froze.<\/p>\n<p>I tried restarting it.<\/p>\n<p>Corrupted.<\/p>\n<p>I opened MONTH 4.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat beneath a desk lamp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were approached today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Month four.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man who spoke to you will not approach you again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Mercer disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 11 showed another recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo men were transferred this morning. It is safer if you never learn why they were watching you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter believes the problem is finished. Vale doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 27 contained only two words.<\/p>\n<p>REAGAN KNOWS.<\/p>\n<p>Six days later, Dad appeared with bruising along his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something happens to me, don\u2019t trust the death certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse hammered.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd don\u2019t trust Reagan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The file ended.<\/p>\n<p>I searched frantically.<\/p>\n<p>Three months of nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then a final video dated eight months earlier\u2014the week Reagan said he died.<\/p>\n<p>Dad lay in what looked like a hospital bed. Bandages crossed his chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re watching this,\u201d he said weakly, \u201cthey think I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone spoke off camera.<\/p>\n<p>Dad glanced toward them, then back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley, before you go anywhere near the house, there is something you have to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I reopened it.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining section had not been corrupted.<\/p>\n<p>It had been deleted.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the file information.<\/p>\n<p>Modified three days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before my release.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew exactly when I was coming home.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded absurd inside a storage unit twenty minutes from a grave carrying Camden Dennis\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing happened.<\/p>\n<p>Then the computer chimed.<\/p>\n<p>ONE NEW FILE.<\/p>\n<p>It was a photograph taken that morning at Silver Lake.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan stood beside a black SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Carter faced her.<\/p>\n<p>Vale stood between them.<\/p>\n<p>They appeared to be arguing.<\/p>\n<p>Vale held a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>On its white border was a handwritten number.<\/p>\n<p>108.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown caller.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carter said, \u201cYou never did know when to leave things alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get this number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought the phone charger beside the bus station this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you watching me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think everything revolves around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make sure you understand reality. You\u2019re broke. You have nowhere to live. You\u2019re a convicted thief. Reagan owns Silver Lake. I run Dennis Industrial. Dad is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world has moved on without you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you afraid I\u2019ll find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Small, but noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>I had touched something.<\/p>\n<p>Carter recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always thought Camden left puzzles specifically for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you in Dad\u2019s office two nights before I was arrested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched the recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Carter sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave that unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale said the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever Camden stored there belongs to Dennis Industrial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad kept my prison letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew people approached me inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter swore softly.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere those men yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Unit 108 isn\u2019t safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Every light in the storage facility went dark.<\/p>\n<p>Not one bulb.<\/p>\n<p>All of them.<\/p>\n<p>I shut the laptop and grabbed it.<\/p>\n<p>Metal rattled somewhere outside.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle door closed.<\/p>\n<p>Voices.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Carter.<\/p>\n<p>He was telling someone to check the rows.<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the rear of the unit.<\/p>\n<p>The camera\u2019s red indicator had disappeared with the power.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the wall with my phone\u2019s weak flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>Then something moved behind me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned, raising the laptop like a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>A shape slipped beneath the half-open door.<\/p>\n<p>The cemetery groundskeeper.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered the door behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping you from making the last mistake of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice carried from the next row.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck every unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the old man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about this place. You knew about the camera.
