Camden Dennis had labeled everything. Tool drawers. Breaker panels. Storage shelves. When I was a kid, I once found dates written beneath the kitchen cabinets because Dad had recorded when each one was installed.

108 was not random.

I went after the groundskeeper but lost him among the cemetery buildings. At the front office, a young employee searched plot numbers and maintenance records for anything connected to 108.

Nothing.

Then she pointed through the western trees.

“There’s a storage facility across the drainage ditch. Pinecrest Self Storage. They have numbered units.”

I almost laughed.

Unit 108 stood in the oldest row.

The door had a built-in brass lock rather than the newer steel discs used elsewhere. I inserted Dad’s key.

Perfect fit.

My hand remained on it without turning.

Three years in Oakwood had cured me of opening unexplained doors.

Someone had framed me with professional precision. Dad had supposedly died. Reagan controlled his house. Carter controlled his company. An unidentified man had waited beside Dad’s grave on the exact day of my release and handed me a key.

Nothing about that invited trust.

I photographed the unit, the lock, and both ends of the row with my phone.

Then I turned the key.

The door opened.

Machine oil and old paper scented the darkness.

Inside stood a workbench, two filing cabinets, several cardboard boxes, an old leather chair, and a brass wall clock I recognized from childhood.

I stared at the clock.

Reagan had always hated it because it chimed every fifteen minutes. Years ago Dad told me its spring had broken and he had taken it away for repair.

Apparently the clock had been living here instead.

A framed photograph rested on the workbench.

My mother and I stood beside Silver Lake in it. I was about ten, holding a fishing rod backward while Claire fought to keep the wind from stealing her hat.

Dad had taken the picture.

Beside it sat a laptop.

I opened the first filing cabinet. Old insurance policies. Machine specifications. Newspaper clippings about Dennis Industrial. Nothing obviously important.

The second cabinet was locked.

Dad’s brass key did not fit.

I searched the boxes.

The first contained envelopes.

My envelopes.

I sat down.

There were dozens upon dozens of them, all addressed to Camden Dennis in my handwriting. Oakwood stamps covered the corners.

Every letter I had sent my father was there.

Most were unopened.

I picked up one from my first month inside. Another from month seven. Another written after my second Christmas.

Sealed.

Dad had not ignored my letters.

He had never read them.

That distinction should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

The second box held financial records.

Vendor agreements. Equipment invoices. Payment authorizations.

Then familiar names began appearing.

Harrow Logistics.

Benton Materials.

Westford Consulting.

The same companies I had questioned before my arrest.

Amounts moved repeatedly between them, often in increments just small enough to avoid certain reporting requirements. Some transactions went back years.

Long before Carter’s gambling problems.

I photographed page after page.

The missing machinery had been camouflage.

The real problem had always been money.

I opened the laptop.

Password required.

Dad’s birthday failed.

Mom’s birthday failed.

The company’s founding date failed.

After another attempt, the computer warned that one more error might lock it.

I stopped.

Dad had once told me a password should never be something a stranger could learn from an obituary.

I leaned back.

That was when I noticed the camera.

It was mounted high in the rear corner, aimed directly at the door.

A tiny red light blinked.

The equipment looked new.

Someone was watching Unit 108.

I stepped underneath it.

“Who?”

The red light kept blinking.

Footsteps sounded outside.

I closed the financial box.

Another step.

Then another.

Someone stopped at my door.

My hand found a heavy iron handle on the workbench.

The storage door lifted.

Polished black shoes appeared beneath it.

Not the groundskeeper’s boots.

A man ducked inside.

“Easy.”

I knew the voice.

Detective Howard Vale had acquired gray at his temples but otherwise looked much as he had three years earlier.
