I know you’ll think I should have trusted you. I did trust you. I copied as much evidence as I could. Elaine and Daniel Mercer helped. Robert Shaw helped after he realized what his brother had become.”

Carter looked toward Elaine.

Robert had not been part of Kendrick’s operation at the end.

He had defected.

“Robert designed the original account structure. He also knows how to prove which transfers were criminal and which were Camden’s attempts to keep Dennis Industrial alive.”

Dad looked up sharply.

The ledger could separate his wrongdoing from Kendrick’s network.

Not erase it.

Clarify it.

Claire continued.

“If I die before this is over, do not let anyone turn Camden’s mistakes into Kendrick’s crimes. That is why your name appears beside Carter’s.”

We knew that part.

Then:

“I also created a second identity for you.”

Carter looked at me.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“If Kendrick ever came for you, Robert was supposed to take you out of the country under the name Francis Cole.”

Dad stared.

“You did what?”

Elaine looked at him.

“She never told me that.”

Claire said, “The documents are in the lake chamber.”

I remembered the passports.

We had not examined every identity.

One might be mine.

“Finnley, I hope you never need them.”

A long pause.

Then Claire’s voice softened.

“I know your father. If I disappear, he will turn grief into work. He will chase every person responsible. He will forget that staying alive is also a duty.”

Dad covered his face.

I had never seen him cry openly.

Not at my trial.

Not at Claire’s grave.

Now his shoulders shook.

Nobody looked away.

Claire continued.

“Camden, if you’re hearing this too, I love you.
