doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cleared this room after Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking to Reagan, who stood behind Vale in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Finnley\u2019s old junk go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat storage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to hit Carter.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes said trust me.<\/p>\n<p>I had very little reason to.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick led us downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The basement smelled exactly as it had when I was a kid.<\/p>\n<p>Cold concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Paint.<\/p>\n<p>Laundry detergent.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan opened a storage room.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes lined three walls.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared on several.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His men began opening them.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are we looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>He remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter your conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detached workshop behind the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick watched us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him the boat was thrown away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick raised the pistol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen shoot me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored me.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cYou searched this house eleven years ago. If Claire trusted Finnley, she knew men like you would never value what children value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He understood the model boat.<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone moved.<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Carter bumped Reagan hard at the basement doorway.<\/p>\n<p>She cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Vale caught her.<\/p>\n<p>For two seconds, bodies blocked the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkshop loft. Blue cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Kendrick\u2019s guard shoved him forward.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, wind had strengthened off the lake.<\/p>\n<p>We crossed toward the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick opened the door himself.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s tools still hung along one wall.<\/p>\n<p>Dust covered the benches.<\/p>\n<p>The loft ladder stood in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue cabinet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>He had heard us.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick climbed.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>No point pretending now.<\/p>\n<p>The blue cabinet sat beneath the eaves.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were old school projects.<\/p>\n<p>A broken baseball glove.<\/p>\n<p>Two fishing rods.<\/p>\n<p>And the wooden boat.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I had built it over six weekends.<\/p>\n<p>The mast leaned slightly because I had refused to measure twice.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick lifted it.<\/p>\n<p>Something rattled inside.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smashed the boat against the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Wood split.<\/p>\n<p>The brass compass rolled across the loft.<\/p>\n<p>I lunged.<\/p>\n<p>So did Kendrick.<\/p>\n<p>He caught it first.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, he looked almost triumphant.<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned the compass over.<\/p>\n<p>The back was engraved with my initials.<\/p>\n<p>F.C.D.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick twisted the housing.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He tried the crown.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Dad climbing.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does it open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pressed the pistol against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearn quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the compass.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had given it to me in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Keep this somewhere Dad won\u2019t tidy it away.<\/p>\n<p>Not open it.<\/p>\n<p>Not protect it.<\/p>\n<p>Keep it.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered another detail.<\/p>\n<p>She had shown me how to find north.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed when I asked what happened if north moved.<\/p>\n<p>North doesn\u2019t move, Finnley.
