You can manage thirty seconds now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Carter almost seemed offended by his own agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took Elaine from a location Kendrick wasn\u2019t supposed to know. That means the farmhouse was compromised before we left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine sat in the kitchen chair with rope around her wrists. No visible blood. He never mentioned Reagan\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe. But Reagan certainly doesn\u2019t want us comparing signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why she took Claire\u2019s file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was searching for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now she knows we found the tackle box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I told her Kendrick contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Carter spread his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the distraction plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cThen Reagan knows we entered the boathouse, but not what was inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad folded the copy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe photograph it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo phones,\u201d Carter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make physical duplicates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy old office printer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to break into the house again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe own the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegally, you\u2019re dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>We entered through the kitchen because Reagan had left in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p>Her coffee cup still sat beside the sink.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinary details bothered me more than the secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Dad copied Claire\u2019s page six times.<\/p>\n<p>We placed the original inside a plastic sleeve beneath the lining of my jacket.<\/p>\n<p>One copy went into Dad\u2019s boot.<\/p>\n<p>Another into Carter\u2019s glove compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Dad scanned a third onto an encrypted drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one of us leaves the factory,\u201d he said, \u201cthe evidence leaves too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if none of us does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Elaine is the only person who knows enough to rebuild it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssuming she survives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded one copy and put it inside the false ledger.<\/p>\n<p>We drove toward Shaw Fabrication just before noon.<\/p>\n<p>No attempt at stealth.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick knew we were coming.<\/p>\n<p>The abandoned plant looked different in daylight.<\/p>\n<p>Less haunted.<\/p>\n<p>More pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>Broken brick.<\/p>\n<p>Collapsed guttering.<\/p>\n<p>Weeds growing through cracked asphalt.<\/p>\n<p>Places where terrible things happen rarely look important enough afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Three vehicles waited outside.<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan\u2019s SUV.<\/p>\n<p>A black pickup I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Carter parked.<\/p>\n<p>Dad touched my shoulder before I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happens, you do not trade yourself for Elaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He withdrew it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer surprised me enough that I met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I am asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We entered together.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick waited on the main factory floor.<\/p>\n<p>He was older than Dad by perhaps ten years, tall despite a slight stoop, silver hair combed neatly backward. He wore a dark coat inappropriate for an abandoned factory and held no visible weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Vale stood to his right.<\/p>\n<p>Armed.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan stood to his left.<\/p>\n<p>Also armed.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine sat near the old office stairs, wrists tied.<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth was uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley\u2019s contingency order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed many documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one authorized his murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me that section came from Camden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cMy signature isn\u2019t on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw genuine uncertainty between the people who had controlled my life.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick extended one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the false ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this is an exchange?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His calmness reminded me of Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe powerful men eventually learned the same voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came because you want answers,\u201d Kendrick said. \u201cElaine is simply encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought I was your son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil you were twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick smiled at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer had distinctive ears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter almost laughed from disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how you figured it out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat and blood records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy keep watching me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then you were useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>Not son.<\/p>\n<p>Useful.<\/p>\n<p>One word destroyed more than a confession could.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Finnley became useful later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeverage over Camden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cYou never got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDidn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick gestured around the factory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sent your son to prison because I built a system that frightened you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t involved in that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoward was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick continued. \u201cHoward has always believed himself independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s pistol shifted slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCareful, Kendrick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see? Everyone eventually wants to become his own father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s expression darkened.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWho ordered the second attempt on me at Oakwood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked at Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>So did everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>She did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>Carter whispered, \u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan\u2019s eyes stayed on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first arrangement failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer wasn\u2019t trying to kill him,\u201d Carter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized that afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you sent someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved.<\/p>\n<p>Vale raised his pistol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said, \u201cFinnley was never going to stop digging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou decided that before I got out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided it before you went in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The contingency signature had not been an emergency decision.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan had wanted me dead from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Kendrick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Claire taught you to notice things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were eleven when Claire died,\u201d Reagan continued. \u201cYou had already started asking why certain invoices came to the house. You remembered names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Harrow.<\/p>\n<p>Benton.<\/p>\n<p>Words overheard at the dinner table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought I knew something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Claire might have told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did Claire die?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>For eleven years, Claire\u2019s death had been simple.<\/p>\n<p>A highway accident.<\/p>\n<p>Rain.<\/p>\n<p>A truck crossing the center line.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan\u2019s face gave nothing away.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick staircase afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s red scarf missing from the coat hook.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven years of believing weather had killed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou murdered expected it and struck Kendrick in the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Vale grabbed him.<\/p>\n<p>Carter fought like someone who had finally found the man responsible for every lie in his childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved toward Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>I moved with him.<\/p>\n<p>Then a gun fired.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Vale stumbled backward.<\/p>\n<p>Blood spread across his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan held the smoking pistol.<\/p>\n<p>She had shot him.<\/p>\n<p>Vale stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to stop Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You\u2019ve been trying to save yourself since Finnley got out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick wiped blood from his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The control had left his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two armed men emerged from behind machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick pointed toward the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>He picked it up and opened to page forty-seven.<\/p>\n<p>The copy sat inside.<\/p>\n<p>He unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved first to Dad\u2019s authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Then lower.<\/p>\n<p>To Reagan\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed the contingency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Camden authorized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s voice became dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried to have Finnley killed without my approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not the reaction I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Neither was Dad\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you care?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Claire left something with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was eleven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The tackle box.<\/p>\n<p>Her red scarf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the morning she died, Claire removed the original master ledger from my safe-deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine stared.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cImpossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Your wife was considerably more capable than you understood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what I have spent eleven years trying to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why keep me alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Claire knew she might die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Claire never trusted Camden with her final insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave it to the one person nobody would think to search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>A memory moved at the edge of my mind.<\/p>\n<p>Not a clear picture.<\/p>\n<p>A sensation.<\/p>\n<p>Rain against kitchen windows.<\/p>\n<p>Claire kneeling in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands fastening something.<\/p>\n<p>A sentence I had forgotten because I was eleven and wanted to go outside.<\/p>\n<p>Keep this somewhere Dad won\u2019t tidy it away.<\/p>\n<p>My hand moved instinctively toward my neck.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing there now.<\/p>\n<p>But as a child, I had owned a small brass compass.<\/p>\n<p>Claire gave it to me shortly before she died.<\/p>\n<p>I wore it for years.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped after the chain broke.<\/p>\n<p>Dad saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>The compass had not been in my apartment when I was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>It had not been among the property Oakwood returned.<\/p>\n<p>I knew exactly where I had left it.<\/p>\n<p>In my childhood bedroom at Silver Lake.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the wooden model boat Dad and I built when I was thirteen.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since leaving prison, I
