Cold air moved through a brick passage barely wide enough for one person. I entered behind Elaine. Carter came next, then Dad, who closed the door without latching it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy leave it open?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they find it locked, they know we used it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was Dad. Even fleeing an armed criminal network, he had time to make the escape look untidy.<\/p>\n<p>We moved through darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Behind us, footsteps reached the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Then Kendrick\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine, I didn\u2019t come to hurt the boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine grabbed his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is not talking to you. He is talking through you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve known me ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you before you knew words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then you left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pain crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time there was no mistaking the target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Reagan told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Camden told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cKeep moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick\u2019s voice followed us down the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut nobody told you why you were chosen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter turned.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows exactly what sentence will make you stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at my hand on his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you\u2019re an expert now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent three years surrounded by men who wanted something. The dangerous ones never started by asking for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared another second.<\/p>\n<p>Then continued.<\/p>\n<p>We emerged through a rusted hatch behind the abandoned chapel two blocks away.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine led us through alleys to an old sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Dad checked beneath it before anyone entered.<\/p>\n<p>Carter watched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you inspect every car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly the ones I intend to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove without lights until we reached the river road.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine sat behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Dad beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Carter and I in back.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke until the archive district disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carter said, \u201cTell me why Kendrick thought I was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine kept her eyes on the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I needed him to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel and I were collecting evidence against Kendrick. When I became pregnant, we knew that if Kendrick discovered Daniel was the father, he would use you to control us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you told him I was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sleep with him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine answered without embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce. Deliberately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed dates that could support the lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s that word again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s hands tightened on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot make you forgive decisions made before you could remember them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Kendrick believed you were his son. That belief kept Daniel alive for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after Daniel died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Reagan raising me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Kendrick trusted her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t trust anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked, \u201cWhy did Kendrick fake his death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the federal case was getting close. Daniel had copied enough records to indict him. After Daniel was killed, investigators moved against Shaw Fabrication. Kendrick arranged an accident, left a body that could be identified as his, and disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really all use the same playbook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not appreciate it.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine did.<\/p>\n<p>A brief, exhausted smile crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick was better at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere has he been?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada. Mexico. Possibly Europe. He used intermediaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale Senior first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Howard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cSo the son inherited his father\u2019s criminal client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine glanced at him in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick watched you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer silenced him.<\/p>\n<p>She continued. \u201cHe believed you were his biological son. Even after disappearing, he wanted you positioned near Dennis Industrial because Camden had absorbed several Shaw contracts and vendor relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad understood first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted access back into the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Reagan married me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked as if someone had struck him.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Reagan telling Carter she married Camden because it was necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Now we knew whose necessity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d Dad asked.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine did not pretend to misunderstand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long did Reagan report to Kendrick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom before she met you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage he had spent years living inside collapsed silently in his face.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to feel satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He had already lost Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Now even the years afterward were being rewritten.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine drove us to an old farmhouse beyond the county line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one knows this location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick found the archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected him to eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe found the archive because someone triggered the St. Agnes index.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he could have followed your alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned toward Carter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBattery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter removed it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad crushed the SIM beneath his boot after we entered the farmhouse.<\/p>\n<p>I watched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou enjoy that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Carter almost smiled at him.<\/p>\n<p>The resemblance was not physical.<\/p>\n<p>It was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Habit.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered how much of Carter had been shaped by trying to become the son Dad would respect.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine spread Claire\u2019s file across a kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Dad placed the false ledger beside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the original,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel photographed part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the photographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said, \u201cWhat if Vale has them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he would not need Carter\u2019s decoy,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter frowned. \u201cSo nobody has the original.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone does,\u201d Elaine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Claire\u2019s file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire may have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went through everything after she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything you knew existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine lifted the page mentioning the lake photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire told me once that if anything happened to her, she had put Daniel\u2019s evidence somewhere Camden would never throw away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe opened the frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the framed picture from Unit 108.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou checked the clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Elaine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Kendrick will expect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat again reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>Carter picked up the photograph reference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat lake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilver Lake,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth shore. Claire used to take Finnley fishing near the old dock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she keep anything there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA tackle box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My memory sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>Green metal.<\/p>\n<p>Rust around the handle.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had refused to replace it because she claimed fish did not care what equipment looked like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boathouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silver Lake house.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed when he saw our faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything really is in that house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cClaire kept the box locked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the brass key in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belonged to Claire before I used it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The key had not begun as Dad\u2019s puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>It had been hers.<\/p>\n<p>We waited until daylight.<\/p>\n<p>Going immediately would have been suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Dad insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Carter paced.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to sleep and failed.<\/p>\n<p>At seven, the farmhouse telephone rang.<\/p>\n<p>All four of us froze.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine had not given anyone the number.<\/p>\n<p>It rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad approached but did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Third ring.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Carter picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick answered.<\/p>\n<p>Even from several feet away, I heard his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning, son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not your son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were for twenty-eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was your mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mistake was trusting your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have Camden\u2019s copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved closer, listening.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick continued. \u201cThere is a page inside that ledger Camden hasn\u2019t found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at the black book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one that proves who framed Finnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s eyes moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Kendrick said. \u201cYou know who built the evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Camden who authorized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad went still.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick laughed softly through the receiver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.
