He underbid contracts, borrowed against equipment twice, moved payroll through temporary accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Reagan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was married to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked out the window.<\/p>\n<p>That part I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan had always described Carter\u2019s father as irresponsible and dead young.<\/p>\n<p>She never mentioned organized laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Shaw Fabrication collapsed, several of Kendrick\u2019s clients came to me. So did some of his employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding Elaine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hired Carter\u2019s mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor eight months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Reagan know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe and I weren\u2019t together then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire was alive.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had met Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>That thought changed the story again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Claire find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscrepancies in legacy vendor accounts. She handled part of the company bookkeeping during those years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me Mom worked in finance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hated calling it that. She said she cleaned up my mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could almost hear her saying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire noticed several accounts connected to former Shaw vendors. Elaine helped her understand where they came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then Elaine disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Claire tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she was afraid I would confront Kendrick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>We both heard the irony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe kept records,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the blue file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan found them after Mom died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou assume a lot about the important parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to give you answers I can defend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was new.<\/p>\n<p>I let the silence sit.<\/p>\n<p>The abandoned Shaw plant appeared near one in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Broken windows lined the long brick building.<\/p>\n<p>A rusted sign hung above the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>SHAW FABRICATION COMPANY.<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s SUV was parked near a side loading dock.<\/p>\n<p>No other vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Dad shut off the pickup a quarter mile away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We approached through weeds.<\/p>\n<p>One side door stood open.<\/p>\n<p>A flashlight beam moved inside.<\/p>\n<p>Carter.<\/p>\n<p>We entered through a different loading bay.<\/p>\n<p>The factory smelled of rust, oil, and river damp.<\/p>\n<p>Old machine frames sat beneath tarps.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere deeper inside, metal scraped concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Dad motioned left.<\/p>\n<p>I went right.<\/p>\n<p>We converged near what had once been the administrative offices.<\/p>\n<p>A light glowed behind frosted glass.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stood inside.<\/p>\n<p>The blue file lay open on a desk.<\/p>\n<p>He was reading.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind your parents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He spun.<\/p>\n<p>His hand moved toward his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad appeared behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Carter froze.<\/p>\n<p>The color left his face.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in my life, Carter had no clever response.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Then whispered, \u201cYou\u2019re dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cApparently that condition hasn\u2019t taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter pulled a pistol.<\/p>\n<p>I moved.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed wildly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to give orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me think you were buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed me the scar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe anything he says?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLess than I used to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Carter noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two doing reconciliation now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Because he\u2019s lying to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed the gun toward the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you weren\u2019t innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes shifted to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent three years thinking I destroyed your life. Want to know where the money system came from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Reagan says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Camden used it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father did not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Carter smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used hidden accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo stabilize the company after Shaw collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what he means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter held up a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire wrote that Camden moved funds through three of Kendrick\u2019s shell companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cTemporary transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndisclosed transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep payroll alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllegal transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission sat heavily.<\/p>\n<p>Carter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour hero built his company partly with money moving through Shaw accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cI repaid every dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t erase it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the blue file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that why Mom investigated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had suspected him.<\/p>\n<p>Carter tossed another page onto the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought Camden might be part of Kendrick\u2019s network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned what the system was only after Elaine disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>The gun lowered slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Elaine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew her as Elaine Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan says her name was Elaine Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot when I knew her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was married to my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked for me under Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was her maiden name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told Claire she had no children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him absorb it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then he moved to the desk, keeping the gun in his right hand.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted a handwritten page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Claire\u2019s writing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Carter read aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine believes the child is safer if Kendrick thinks she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at the page.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice became unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirth records were altered through Vale\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale\u2019s father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cHoward Vale Senior was county clerk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine insists Reagan must never know where the boy was placed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>The factory seemed to contract around us.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick believes Reagan\u2019s son is his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad went perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Carter whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>His hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine says Reagan agreed to raise the boy because Kendrick needed an heir tied to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter lowered the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not Reagan\u2019s son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>He aimed the gun at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou adopted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never checked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s breathing became ragged.<\/p>\n<p>The confident man from every childhood fight was gone.<\/p>\n<p>He looked younger.<\/p>\n<p>Lost.<\/p>\n<p>Then headlights swept across the broken factory windows.<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gunfire shattered the glass.<\/p>\n<p>We dropped behind the old desk.<\/p>\n<p>A second shot struck the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Carter cursed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did they find me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour phone,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>Carter reached into his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The screen was still lit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another bullet punched through the office door.<\/p>\n<p>I crawled toward the side wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many exits?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad pointed toward the factory floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked toward the loading bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him your location?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know he was trying to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should\u2019ve learned from family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter almost hit him.<\/p>\n<p>Another shot ended the argument.<\/p>\n<p>A voice echoed across the factory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut the file down and walk out!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter shouted, \u201cYou knew about Elaine!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vale answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho am I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cThat means he knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter shouted again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are my parents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s reply came through the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother was Elaine Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vale said, \u201cYou don\u2019t want that answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stood despite the gunfire.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale answered from the factory floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick Shaw wasn\u2019t your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale stepped into view below us.<\/p>\n<p>He held a pistol with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly
