After Reagan moved in, every trace of my mother vanished within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Dad followed me reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped several feet from the bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan was speaking again.<\/p>\n<p>Not on the phone this time.<\/p>\n<p>A man answered her.<\/p>\n<p>Carter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have burned it years ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had, Camden would\u2019ve noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe noticed everything eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always underestimated him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you always acted like he was smarter than everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was smarter than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carter laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why you married him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad flinched beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan answered, \u201cI married Camden because it was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>His face went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNecessary for what?\u201d Carter asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep control of what Claire found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse increased.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer to the door.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said, \u201cClaire\u2019s been dead eleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat didn\u2019t make the documents disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan made a small irritated sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen your mother protected you better than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s head turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The world shifted one inch.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>Carter spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Claire found something about Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she discovered where the money originated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never said my mother was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there was no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear paper being unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter, your father was not the first person using Camden\u2019s company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laundering system existed before you ever touched an invoice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That matched Dad\u2019s words in the cemetery shed.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had expanded something already buried in the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho created it?\u201d Carter asked.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed was absolute.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>He did not seem surprised that Carter\u2019s father was involved.<\/p>\n<p>But the next sentence changed that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your mother helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s voice went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died when I was six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s hand gripped the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed harshly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no reason to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always have a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat file is the reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something struck furniture inside the room.<\/p>\n<p>Carter must have taken the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Pages rustled.<\/p>\n<p>Then his breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecords Claire gathered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose name is Elaine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered beside me, \u201cElaine Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>He had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could explain, Carter asked inside the bedroom, \u201cElaine Mercer is my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt another piece move into place.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The inmate who had approached me.<\/p>\n<p>Same surname.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidence?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing felt accidental anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Carter spoke more quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you what your father wanted you told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Camden knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shut his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire found Elaine\u2019s name in old company records. She realized the accounts predated Carter\u2019s father\u2019s supposed death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question hit everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Even through the closed door I could hear Carter take a step backward.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face had hardened into concentration.<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cThis began before Reagan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I barely moved my lips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot this far before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside, Carter demanded, \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen him in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why keep this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed once, but the sound contained no humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A telephone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gestured me backward.<\/p>\n<p>We retreated into a linen alcove as Reagan opened the bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>She walked past us, phone pressed to her ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlow down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter followed.<\/p>\n<p>He still held the blue file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho found what?\u201d Reagan asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s voice was faint through the phone, impossible to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her head turned toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Don\u2019t come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter mouthed something.<\/p>\n<p>She waved him quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale, listen to me. If the federal people have reopened the Harrow accounts, you cannot be seen here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>Federal people.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe his earlier contact had finally moved.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone queried old banking records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been out one day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve underestimated him before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan looked toward the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression turned grim.<\/p>\n<p>Carter opened the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should destroy this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Camden is alive, Claire\u2019s research is one thing he will risk exposing himself to recover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>There was the answer.<\/p>\n<p>The file was not originally bait.<\/p>\n<p>It had just become bait.<\/p>\n<p>Carter tucked it beneath his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019m taking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what\u2019s in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently neither do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He started downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Camden appears, do not shoot him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s laugh drifted up the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat concern didn\u2019t stop you eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened eight months ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Always later.<\/p>\n<p>But Carter and Reagan had reached the first floor.<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the study.<\/p>\n<p>Dad removed a thin metal tool from his jacket and worked the compartment lock.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were steady.<\/p>\n<p>Mine were not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine Mercer,\u201d I whispered. \u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bookkeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Claire died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought she was dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she left the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know she was Carter\u2019s mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was Carter\u2019s father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKendrick Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That name meant something.<\/p>\n<p>I searched memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShaw Fabrication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former competitor.<\/p>\n<p>The company had collapsed before Dad expanded Dennis Industrial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter\u2019s surname isn\u2019t Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan changed it after she married me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou adopted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Carter Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>My stepbrother.<\/p>\n<p>Legally my father\u2019s son.<\/p>\n<p>Biologically tied to the man who apparently created the laundering system Dad later inherited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Reagan marry you because of the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard what she told Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think she might be lying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Reagan lies with purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The compartment clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger remained inside.<\/p>\n<p>Thick.<\/p>\n<p>Black leather.<\/p>\n<p>No title.<\/p>\n<p>He removed the sealed envelope beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Across the front, in his own handwriting, was written:<\/p>\n<p>LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT \u2014 CAMDEN A. DENNIS.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at it for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill sealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means they never found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He put both items inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Then we heard the front door open.<\/p>\n<p>Not Carter.<\/p>\n<p>He had just left.<\/p>\n<p>Someone entered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Male voice.<\/p>\n<p>Vale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you not to come,\u201d Reagan said downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m beyond caring what you told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA federal subpoena hit one of Harrow\u2019s old accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what investigation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vale swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took Claire\u2019s file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped at the hidden panel.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said, \u201cHe has a right to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, he doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s her son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly why he cannot see the whole file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father and I exchanged another look.<\/p>\n<p>Her son.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>Vale knew.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan asked, \u201cWhat aren\u2019t you telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine wasn\u2019t only keeping books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was she doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale spoke so softly I nearly missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was working with federal investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire found the accounts because Elaine put them where she could find them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Vale continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine was building a case against Kendrick Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why disappear?\u201d Reagan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Kendrick discovered what she was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the case collapsed. I know Elaine disappeared. I know Kendrick was declared dead six months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cDeclared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Same word.<\/p>\n<p>Same pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Fake deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden identities.<\/p>\n<p>Buried records.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan asked the question I was already thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Kendrick really dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That silence was enough.<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked beneath Dad\u2019s boot.<\/p>\n<p>Vale stopped talking.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>The sound had been tiny.<\/p>\n<p>But downstairs, Vale said, \u201cSomeone\u2019s upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached for the hidden passage.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan whispered, \u201cCarter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale drew something.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the unmistakable slide of a pistol leaving a holster.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened the panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We entered the service corridor as footsteps climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed the panel behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Vale entered the study less than ten seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>He moved directly to the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>We could hear shelves being pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>Then the metal compartment door.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReagan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad motioned me deeper into the passage.<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s voice turned flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo is Camden\u2019s real will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reagan breathed in sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said the sentence that told us our escape had already become a hunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall Carter.
