The timestamp showed 9:14 p.m., forty-eight hours before police officers entered my apartment and put me in handcuffs.<\/p>\n<p>I had been home that night.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered because Dad had called around eight and asked whether I had eaten. He sounded distracted. When I offered to come over, he told me he was tired and going to bed early.<\/p>\n<p>He had lied.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>The recording had no audio for the first ten seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Dad crossed the room, shut the office door, and turned toward Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Then sound arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou leave Finnley out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said something too low for the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Dad struck the desk with his palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamden, this has moved beyond what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll deal with the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer to the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed both hands over his face. He looked exhausted in a way I had never seen before the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Carter paced toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps digging. He\u2019s already asking about Harrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My name again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered sharply. \u201cThen give him an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale spoke next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It\u2019s everyone\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video glitched.<\/p>\n<p>Several seconds disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>When the image stabilized, Carter had moved closer to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when he finds Benton? The offshore transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Those were the companies in the box beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at Carter for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019ll stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hit harder than anything Carter said.<\/p>\n<p>I replayed it.<\/p>\n<p>Because I\u2019ll stop him.<\/p>\n<p>The man I had imagined defending me while I was in prison had been discussing me as a problem before the crime ever occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The recording skipped again.<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s voice returned first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen make the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s shoulders lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat choice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither Finnley takes the theft charge, or Carter solves the problem his way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter smiled.<\/p>\n<p>A small, almost embarrassed smile.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Vale did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA robbery goes bad. Wrong place. Wrong time. Tragic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went numb.<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved so fast the camera barely caught it.<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed Carter by the front of his shirt and slammed him against the office wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you touch him\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale pulled Dad back.<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hatred in Carter\u2019s face was unlike anything I remembered from family arguments. This was not jealousy about money or attention. It was older. Personal in a way I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>Dad released him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vale said the words that changed the shape of my conviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years, maybe less with good behavior. White-collar theft. I had learned to wait before swinging, to count breaths, to let rage become information.<\/p>\n<p>Information.<\/p>\n<p>That was what Dad had left here.<\/p>\n<p>Not an apology.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>A folder had appeared on the desktop.<\/p>\n<p>FINNLEY.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were dates.<\/p>\n<p>Some corresponded to my arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Others to my trial.<\/p>\n<p>Others to months during my imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the file marked SENTENCING.<\/p>\n<p>The screen showed my father sitting alone in the same office.<\/p>\n<p>No Carter.<\/p>\n<p>No Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Dad faced the camera directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley,\u201d he began.<\/p>\n<p>My throat closed.<\/p>\n<p>He looked older than he had that morning in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are seeing this, then I failed to keep the past from reaching you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I could tell you everything now. I cannot. There are people watching every channel I could use to contact you. Calls. Mail. Visits. If you know the wrong thing at the wrong moment, you become more dangerous to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are going to hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the image cut out.<\/p>\n<p>The file was corrupted.<\/p>\n<p>I swore and tried reopening it.<\/p>\n<p>The same result.<\/p>\n<p>Another file.<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 4.<\/p>\n<p>Dad again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he sat in darkness with only the desk lamp lit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were approached today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>How could he know?<\/p>\n<p>Month four was when Mercer cornered me outside the laundry room.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked straight into the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man will not approach you again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved over my arms.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody inside Oakwood had been reporting to him.<\/p>\n<p>I opened MONTH 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo inmates were transferred this morning. You never knew why they were watching you. That is better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter believes the matter is finished. Vale does not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MONTH 27.<\/p>\n<p>No video.<\/p>\n<p>Only text.<\/p>\n<p>REAGAN KNOWS.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the two words.<\/p>\n<p>Another file existed six days later.<\/p>\n<p>Its video shook as though the camera had been positioned hastily.<\/p>\n<p>Dad appeared with bruising near his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something happens to me, do not trust the death certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned closer to the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not trust Reagan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The file ended.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the unit, wind rattled the metal doors.<\/p>\n<p>I searched for another recording.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing for three months.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final file.<\/p>\n<p>Its date was eight months ago.<\/p>\n<p>The week Reagan claimed Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>I clicked.<\/p>\n<p>The video showed an unfamiliar room.<\/p>\n<p>Dad lay in a hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>Bandaging crossed his chest.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was weak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re seeing this, they believe I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked offscreen.<\/p>\n<p>Someone said something I could not hear.<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he returned his gaze to the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley, you must understand something before you go near the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The file stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I hit play again.<\/p>\n<p>Same result.<\/p>\n<p>The rest had been deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Not corrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Deleted.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the file properties.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had altered it three days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before my release.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever controlled the laptop had known exactly when I was coming home.<\/p>\n<p>The camera above me blinked.<\/p>\n<p>I stood beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saying the word aloud felt ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>My father had a grave twenty minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the question remained in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the desktop for any communication software. Nothing obvious. Then a message appeared in the lower-right corner.<\/p>\n<p>ONE NEW FILE.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Silver Lake house.<\/p>\n<p>Taken that morning.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was 8:42 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan stood beside a black SUV near the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stood opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>Between them was Detective Vale.<\/p>\n<p>They were arguing.<\/p>\n<p>I zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>Vale held something in his right hand.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Even enlarged, I could not see the image clearly.<\/p>\n<p>But written across its white border were two characters.<\/p>\n<p>108.<\/p>\n<p>They knew about the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>A man breathed on the other end.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carter said, \u201cYou never learned when to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my jaw tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get this number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought it this afternoon at the kiosk beside the bus station. Cash. Blue jacket. Same suspicious look you\u2019ve had since you were twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you watching me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everything is about you, little brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not your brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill sensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you to understand your position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are broke, homeless, and freshly released after a felony conviction. Reagan owns Silver Lake. I control the company. Dad is dead. The world already believes you\u2019re a thief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you\u2019re trespassing in property that doesn\u2019t belong to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeys don\u2019t prove ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you afraid I\u2019ll find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence changed.<\/p>\n<p>I had touched something.<\/p>\n<p>Carter recovered quickly. \u201cYou always thought Dad left clues for you. That was your problem. You mistook his attention for trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you in his office two days before I was arrested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice lost its amusement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinnley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Carter sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave the unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale already tried that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen to me. Whatever Camden kept there belongs to the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad kept my prison letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think that means something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he knew men were approaching me inside Oakwood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter swore under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>That reaction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out of there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that place isn\u2019t safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately, the facility lights went dark.<\/p>\n<p>Every row.<\/p>\n<p>Not a blown bulb.<\/p>\n<p>Power.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, metal rattled.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody had closed the security gate at the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard an engine.<\/p>\n<p>Not passing this time.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Headlights swept across the far wall.<\/p>\n<p>A dark sedan turned into my row.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the storage door until only six inches remained.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan stopped several units away.<\/p>\n<p>Two doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear voices.<\/p>\n<p>One belonged to Carter.<\/p>\n<p>The other I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around.<\/p>\n<p>Concrete walls on three sides.<\/p>\n<p>One exit.<\/p>\n<p>I carried the laptop to the rear and searched for anything usable as a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>My hand touched the brass clock.<\/p>\n<p>It was heavier than expected.<\/p>\n<p>Something shifted inside.<\/p>\n<p>Not gears.<\/p>\n<p>Loose weight.<\/p>\n<p>I set it down and removed the back panel.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism had been modified.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the clockwork was a narrow compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Dad had hidden there was gone.<\/p>\n<p>But scratched into the wood beneath it were four words.<\/p>\n<p>CLAIRE KNEW BEFORE I DID.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps came closer.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my mother\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had died eleven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Long before my arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Reagan married Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Carter supposedly took control of anything.<\/p>\n<p>The storage-unit door began to rise.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the laptop in both hands, ready to swing.<\/p>\n<p>A pair of worn work boots appeared beneath the opening.<\/p>\n<p>Then a familiar voice said urgently, \u201cFinnley, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elderly groundskeeper ducked inside.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled the door shut behind him.<\/p>\n<p>And this time, when he straightened, the weakness vanished from his posture completely.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11261\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When the Cemetery Groundskeeper Removed His Cap, I Finally Understood Why My Father\u2019s Grave Had Never Felt Real<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds I could not make myself press play.
