Storage facilities. Equipment. A warehouse. There also appears to be an interest connected to a marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be my guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is everything worth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a reliable valuation yet. Preliminary records suggest several million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>For two years Dale had told me we were struggling.<\/p>\n<p>I had taken Saturday cleaning jobs after the salon closed for the week.<\/p>\n<p>I had postponed dental work.<\/p>\n<p>I had worn the same winter coat until the lining separated at one sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I complained, Dale reminded me that small businesses survived because families sacrificed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I cleaned offices on Saturdays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI skipped appointments because we supposedly couldn\u2019t afford them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was sitting on property worth millions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t yet know what he personally controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he told me we were broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my fingers against my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns this company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>There was no humor in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never heard its name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can I own something I never created?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what we need to establish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down the hallway toward Dale\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>The door was closed.<\/p>\n<p>Locked, as usual.<\/p>\n<p>He called it his business room.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had treated that lock as a boundary.<\/p>\n<p>That morning it looked like evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I bring you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery financial document you can safely access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may have more than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t destroy anything. We had dinner afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice wrote down the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo either this notarization occurred at another time and was backdated, or someone certified your presence when you weren\u2019t present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied another field.<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe identification information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatch what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She showed me the number entered beside the identification field.<\/p>\n<p>It was not mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo somebody made a mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice told me she did not believe that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr somebody created identification information to support the forged signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Forgery was one thing.<\/p>\n<p>Fabricating the identity behind the signature felt different.<\/p>\n<p>It meant planning.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice closed the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Ashley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. This predates Ashley by years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 11:42, Dale called.<\/p>\n<p>I watched his name flash across my phone.<\/p>\n<p>I let it ring.<\/p>\n<p>He called again.<\/p>\n<p>Then messages arrived.<\/p>\n<p>We need to talk.<\/p>\n<p>Please don\u2019t do anything until I explain.<\/p>\n<p>I can explain everything.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice watched me turn the phone face down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another message buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Carol, I\u2019m asking you as your husband.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe uses that phrase whenever he needs me to surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas it worked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty-six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 1:06, Ashley called.<\/p>\n<p>I almost ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>Then I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss C?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale came to my apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he hurt you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He wanted me to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants me to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice immediately reached for a legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what I knew. About you. About everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley took a shaking breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants me to say I knew he was married and knew about the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She cried harder.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, the sentence seemed absurd.<\/p>\n<p>Another woman beyond his wife and girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know she exists?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn his second phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Patrice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat second phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps one hidden in his truck. I found it once. He got furious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the messages say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see everything. But he was talking about transfers and leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaving whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening I returned home alone.<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s truck was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I walked through rooms that suddenly looked like a museum dedicated to somebody else\u2019s marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Wedding photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Our daughter\u2019s school pictures.<\/p>\n<p>The dining table where we had celebrated birthdays.<\/p>\n<p>The couch where Dale slept during Sunday football games.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence of a life that had existed alongside another one.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley had said the phone was kept in his truck.<\/p>\n<p>The truck was gone.<\/p>\n<p>But behind the house sat Dale\u2019s spare work van.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in the console.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in the glove compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw a black case beneath the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a phone.<\/p>\n<p>I left it where it was and called Patrice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotograph it exactly where you found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t open messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s already powered on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill don\u2019t touch anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if the answer is in there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably is.
