I knew the pressure of his pen strokes.<\/p>\n<p>He had written my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re looking at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand my own signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Business has your name on it. Fraud has mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is she talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale rounded on her. \u201cGo outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was different now.<\/p>\n<p>For months she had entered my salon carrying the confidence of someone who believed she knew exactly where her life was going. That confidence had begun breaking apart.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the certificate beside the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dale.<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss C?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re Carol Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward Dale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Carol Harris?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley took one backward step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she repeated. \u201cYou said your wife was older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised an eyebrow despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much older?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley flushed. \u201cHe said sixty-five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was ambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol, enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley\u2019s voice rose. \u201cYou told me she lived in Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you were separated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she knew about us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Each answer seemed to remove another support from beneath her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you filed for divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley gave a short, disbelieving laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you been married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>She looked as if I had struck her.<\/p>\n<p>Dale moved toward her. \u201cAshley, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I felt something I had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>Pity.<\/p>\n<p>Not for Dale.<\/p>\n<p>For her.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley had been sleeping with my husband. She had accepted his gifts and planned a future that required the end of my marriage. This was not anger.<\/p>\n<p>It was panic wearing anger\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n<p>A soft movement came from behind the supply curtain.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice stepped into the salon.<\/p>\n<p>Dale turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy attorney,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The change in his face was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice walked toward us, calm and unhurried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Dale. You planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just expected me to cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice examined the documents without removing them from my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol, keep the originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sentence doesn\u2019t give you permission to use my identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was protecting us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does Ashley know about an account worth hundreds of thousands of dollars while I\u2019ve spent two years being told we can barely pay bills?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>That told Patrice something.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Dale noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to tell my lawyer what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Please.<\/p>\n<p>I could not remember the last time he had used that word with me.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley was crying silently now.<\/p>\n<p>She removed the chain from around her neck and opened her hand.<\/p>\n<p>The engagement ring rested against her palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas any of it real?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshley\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The apology landed somewhere I was not prepared to examine.<\/p>\n<p>I went to my station drawer and removed the black appointment book.<\/p>\n<p>Dale recognized it only as a notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley recognized what was inside once I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Statements.<\/p>\n<p>The condo.<\/p>\n<p>The boat.<\/p>\n<p>The account.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed divorce.<\/p>\n<p>The debt.<\/p>\n<p>The ring.<\/p>\n<p>Everything she had told me.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough to start listening carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Dale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she never paid attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale stepped toward me and reached for my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I moved away before he touched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand dropped.<\/p>\n<p>The room became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol, we can fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you. The business needed restructuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hid money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshley knew about it. I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I understood then that I had spent years asking the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p>I had wondered whether Dale still loved me.<\/p>\n<p>Whether our marriage had become stale.<\/p>\n<p>Whether I had missed some emotional distance growing between us.<\/p>\n<p>None of those questions mattered anymore.<\/p>\n<p>The question was simpler.<\/p>\n<p>What had my husband been preparing to do to me?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t planning a divorce,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were planning an exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you wanted me holding whatever you didn\u2019t take with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re finished here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley removed the ring from its chain.<\/p>\n<p>She placed it on my counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshley, don\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she walked out.<\/p>\n<p>Dale started after her but stopped at the door.<\/p>\n<p>He looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>For one instant I saw the younger man I had married. The man who danced barefoot with me in our first apartment. The man who held our daughter after she was born and cried harder than the baby.<\/p>\n<p>Memory is cruel that way.<\/p>\n<p>It does not disappear when love does.<\/p>\n<p>Then my eyes fell to the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever man I remembered, this was the man standing in front of me now.<\/p>\n<p>Dale left.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice waited until his truck pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>Then she locked the salon door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down in Ashley\u2019s empty chair.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice spread the documents across my counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is worse than the affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Carol. I mean legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much worse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these are what they appear to be, somebody has been placing substantial liabilities in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow substantial?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My black appointment book lay beside the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Months of Ashley\u2019s careless confessions had suddenly become a map.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I copy this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave you dates?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProperties?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccount amounts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrice nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Ashley may have handed us the beginning of a financial trail without realizing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the chair where she had sat every Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get organized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not warn him about anything else we discover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he already knows I\u2019m done trusting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same as knowing what we know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gathered the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight, change every password you control. Photograph financial records. Secure identification documents.
